Whenever my wife asks me to do something, I tell her, "I'd love to, honey, but my old war wound is acting up today."

Just WHICH old "war wound" is hurting me on any given day depends on just what she wants me to do. Sometimes it's my "back injury." Sometimes it's my "shoulder wound." Sometimes I'm just so dizzy I can barely manage to sit at the computer and type.

Lucky for me I'm never hurting bad enough that I can't manage to eat.

But if all this hasn't brought a tear of compassion to your eyes.......I've got another pain and it hurts some days like a wasp up my nose stinging the piss out of me. (And if you ever DO get a wasp up your nose...trust me...you will pee before he runs out of venom! )

Unfortunately this pain isn't caused by a wasp. If it were, I could put the barrel of my .357 up my nose and kill his ass and end my suffering all with one bullet.

No, friends, I'm suffering somethin' fierce because I don't have a .35 caliber rifle. I don't need it but I sure got a hankerin' for a little .358 Winchester or even a .35 Whelen.

I pestered Longbob about giving me his Whelen until he moved to another website just to get away from me, causing me to list him in my data base as a FAIR WEATHER FRIEND.

I don't know what I'm gonna do about this problem, frankly. I never SEE a .358 or Whelen to buy and I'd probably be too cheap to flip out the cash if I did. So I'm just "conflicted internally" way bad. I probably need psychiatric counseling over this issue but my damn health insurance won't cover it. Those bastards just laugh when I tell um how bad I feel.

Shucks, they'll piss away a fortune on drugs for me but won't give me a dime for anything that might actually make me feel good like I got a reason to go on living for another year.

The world is just DICKED UP if you ask me.

Some people think I'm a hard ass and grouchy old man. But sufferin' like I do, it's a wonder I ain't turned into one of them cereal killers or somethin'.

Anyhow, thanks for listening to me bitch about this. I feel a little better now. I'm gonna go kick the wife's fucking dog and transfer some of my pain and aggression to his worthless ass. That always calms me down a tad as well.

I hope none of you fellows are hurting for a certain gun like me. If you are, I know how you feel.

Now where's that dog.........

Western, I'm sorry you're sufferin as well. I hope you didn't catch it from me.

Hard to believe all of a sudden the .35 Whelen barrels are "out of stock." I guess everyone should be glad we ain't hankerin' for a .30 caliber gun or there probably wouldn't be any .30 caliber barrels either.

If I weren't a "right winger," I'd blame this whole mess on one O them "vast right wing conspiracy things." So this delima has got to be coming from the Left Wing.

They better hope I never catch them in the crosswalk.

As a shooter of one of the .35's I can feel for you. I had the same symptoms before my first .358 STA. It took two of them to assuage my longing. Good shooting.

Leo, I used to have a Marlin 1894 in .357 and the little thing practically became my right arm. I took it everywhere and used it for everything from Whitetail on down. I virtually shot the thing to pieces. Got to where I was having some problems with the gun that would require sending it back to Marlin but I've heard so many horror stories of guys who sent their guns back to the factory that I decided, "Sod that!" And I just sold it.

I understand Winchester is building their lever action in .357 as well and I'm tempted to take a swipe at it.

Still the .358 Win has always been a bit of a dream of mine. The reason I've been in such heat for this cartridge is I want it as a cast bullet rifle. I have visions of myself raining down 250 gr cast bullets on all creatures great and small.

And when black bears start prowling the streets of San Antonio, I figure I could load up some jacketed pellets and hire out to defend the neighborhood trash cans.

Such are my fantasies.

I've been to several gun shows thinking this is surely the place to find the .35 caliber rifle of my dreams. But I've about decided they must have guards at the doors to gun shows, carefully screening every vendor for .35 caliber rifles before letting them into the auditoriums.

I suspect Paris Hilton will start stalking me before I ever find my .358.

I had a similar pain once but solved it with a Ruger M77 in 35 whelen. I really can't think of any finer do-it-all caliber for general big game hunting. I have a burris 3-9x40 fullfield II and a timney trigger in it and it will shoot 3/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with 250gr Hornady RN @ 2400fps, and 1"-1 1/4" 5 shot groups with a sierra 225gr SBT @ 2650fps. I can use both loads with the same zero, dead on at 100 for the 250s and +3 high with the 225s. THat places the 225s dead on at around 250 yards and a fur on hold on a carabou out to 325 yards. It took a little reloading work to figure them loads out to work together but their about at perfection now. I just have to get a decent wood stock for it and get rid of that ugly synthetic stock that it sits in now.

THere is just something about those 35 cals. Not quite as exciting as a hot stepping 30 or 338 cal ultra/super/magnum, but get anything you would ever dream of doing done, with less recoil and muzzle blast.

Pull yourself together, man! You don't know how good you have it. I wish I was back in your shoes. But, no, I had to buy a Whelen, thinking that would fill the empty space in my heart.

Nope.

So, last fall a little BLR in 358 jumped over the counter, into my arms. Heaven! I thought. Little did I realize that even this sweet darling did nothing to fill the space. I just found out that my gunsmith has a 358 Norma reamer. Perhaps that will do the trick? I sure hope so, because I don't want to have to pull the trigger on a STA! LOL Dutch.

Pecos, i feel your pain. I have had the 35 desease so badly that I've sought succour in a 357 Herrett, 35 Rem, 358 Win BLR, 35 Whelen Mauser, 350 Rem Mag Mauser, 358 Norma Mag Mauser, and my current sickness, a 35-378 Wby. There is no cure, you just keep finding more 35's to want. - Dan

"War Wounds" -- Over the years my wife and I have cracked a lot of jokes based on an old soap opera plot device about some guy who couldn't father children "due to an old polo injury." That's made for a lot of laughs!

Well, no since me being a spoiled sport about all this. I can see I don't have a monopoly on suffering. I reckon all of us have got a couple of itches we just can't scratch.

Thanks for all the encouragement and shoulders to cry on. I'll keep up my quest and like the holy grail, maybe someday I'll find it.

My 358 Norma Magnum is my "go to" elk rifle. It would be hard for me to go after a .35 Whelen, but a nice, trim .375 Winchester Big Bore in mint condition would perk my ears up. Or maybe a nice .220 Swift in a Ruger M77 Target Model...

Pecos,

This is a long way from San Antonio but I saw a Remington 700 in 35 Whelen at Gander Mountain in Appleton yesterday on the discounted rifles rack. I am not sure what it was priced at but I think it was $ 499 and it looked unused. If you like you can call Ken there at (920)731-9400 or let me know and I could check with them and get whatever information you want. I hope this helps.

Good hunting!
