I went to the gun shop today looking around and saw a M70 XTR in 7mm REM mag with a nicer (for tasco) scope for 349.00. The rifle is about 80%. I'm torn on the chambering but it seemed like a good price. I will admit i'm no authority on M70's but i believe it was mid 80's or so. Anyone know what this rifle shoul bring? I need to get me one of those camera phones, sure would have been helpful. It is blued with wood with comb stock and no foreend tip, just solid wood. It looked like this one.

I am no expert but the big one is the claw extractor making the pre 64 & classic actions CRF. The production quality of the true pre 64 rifles is very good.

I have used a post 64 .300 mag for 40 years almost and it has been a very good and accurate rifle. Used it last year to shoot an antelope at 300 yards.

Sorry but others will need to jump in to tell you any more.

I have the same rifle you are looking at and I bought it for 300.00 ten years ago. Whatever someone might say to the contary, a 7 mag and a M70 is STILL a very good combnation for hunting all most anything in NA. Most guys spend more time reading or chatting than actually hunting. They will buy the newest and latest because they think they will gain an advantage when more practice with rifle they know well is the real way to gain a advantage.

The biggest difference is that you can't tell everyone it is a pre-64. Smiler Being able to say that to everyone within earshot is quite important to a few fellows I have met at the range and at hunting camps.

Thanks, I think i'm gonna go back and see if they still have it. I have always wanted an M70 as well as a 7mm mag and have never bought either of them.

The XTR came out with a little fancier wood in the late 80's to mid 90's. I bought a new one in 1989 for $400. I have seen them sell for $600 to $700 just prior to Winchester opening the new South Carolina plant. I have several and they are all MOA with handloads.
