I'm rebarreling a FN Mauser 7mm Rem Mag I got years ago.

It currently has a 26" #5 (yes #5).

I want to stay at 26".

Is a #3 to light? The #5 is a pain.

I think you'll be fine. I've owned a number of 7mm mag rifles and find it to be a very shootable cartridge with manageable recoil and less muzzle blast than most magnums. None of my 7mags had very heavy barrels.

I agree with Rub Line. My 264WM carries a 26" #3 Lilja and it is not too heavy and gets the job done.

Are you sitting in a deer blind or lugging it up a mountain. If I was sitting in a stand and liked a stable platform, I would choose a heavier barrel. If sheep hunting; the lighter barrel.
What type of hunting do you enjoy?

I'll be walking with this rifle; maybe not mountains, but at least lots of walking and rolling hills.
