Yeah I know ..........................light bullets are not appropriate for the .300 RUM.........."talk to the hand ladies, the face äin't listening" Big Grin

But I wanted this for an out to 500 yards varmint blaster with maximum explosiveness.

therefore I have chosen the 150 gr Nos BT, I have remington brass (I think thats all you can get in Oz) redding deluxe dies, Fed 215M primers and a can of AR2225 (Retumbo).

Hoping to get near 3600 fps........I wonder what this load will do to foxes etc. inside say 200 yards ??

I figure BC would not play much part to 500 yards which for me is a bloody long way so I thought the 150's driven fast would be the go.

Rifles is a rem 700 PSS, with a canjar trigger, I have badger rings and base coming along with a 8.25-25 leupold. Should be some fun I reckon, little different to playing with big bores I suppose !!

Sounds like a good combination and good explosiveness. Once u shoot one, let me know the results as I want to know what my 300 win mag may be capapble of with 180 gr BT.

We think alike, but why did you bypass the 110gr bullets? I've been told the 110's go off like hand grenades when they hit flesh.

Think about this. Compare the wind bucking ability of BT's in 150 165 and 180 grain in your 300 RUM at the velocities you would be shooting them.
Also I would try them all at 500 yards on paper. That might change your bullet choice, then again you might find the 150 BT is the best choice.

PC,
Dont forget the masters of rapid expansion ... Sierra. Their 150gr Gameking BT may also be the go, though it wont look as pretty as the Nosler BT when loaded up. That rifle will be a fun plaything!
Cheers...

Probably kill them

FWIW you might want to try the Hornady 150 SST and their 155 A-Max, the Sierra 155 HPBT matchking Palma might also serve your interest.

TC I forgot about those....................I may try them one day, you would near get 4000 fps with them.

Con yeah this shouls be abit of fun, I will attempt to fit the canjar trigger tommorow.

Vapo thanks for the suggestion on those bullets I have 4 boxes of Nos 150 gr to fire off.

The 180's and heavier no doubt will buck the win better but I am kind of hoping that I will get explosive results on foxes like what you get with a 50 gr bullet in the 22/250 on rabbits, thats why I chose the 150 gr.....wether I will or not is another story I suppose.

Am Heading away at the end of this month so hope to give this rig a work out on some varmints then !!

Forgot to add I did some loads up today and wanted to go asl long as I could and still feed through the mag, my loads have an OAL of 3.681" and manage to feed, so thats as close to the lands as I am getting.....I like to have use of the mag.

They do look pretty impressive loaded up with the Nosler BT's.

FWIW--there was a post somewhere recently where a guy was shooting 110 V maxes out of a 300 wby at near 3900 fps and was amazed at 1/2 moa accuracy. Ouch wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of that load!

The 150 NBT at that speed will be fairly effectice on old Reynard. If you hit the shoulder bone, back bone or the breast bone (on a frontal shot) then they will be very spectacular!

From the for what it is worth category, the 125's to 165's will be quite a bit more devastating than the flyweights (110's). I know it is kind of hard to believe but it is true. The heavier slugs will make the fur fly a fair bit better.

I do a lot of shooting of chucks, mostly at long range. And I always use bigger calibers, the 22's are just no fun. When I had a 300 Wby tube on my old M700 I went to the 110's as they were accurate and I thought they would really toss a chuck around. Not true the slugs a bit heavier will do much more damage. I've found this to be true of most all cal's. The bullet a bit heavier will be more dramatic.

That's for what it is worth.

Mark,

so really for maximum destructivess on light thin skinned stuff the 165 gr nos bt would have been a better bet ??

Depend on the size of the critter but yeah the 125/150 and 165 NBT's are gonna be leading the pack.

MD

Nice PC. Definitely keep us informed. I'm still waiting to get my own 300 RUM, so I'll be watching for your field tests.

As an afterthought, I wonder how the MatchKings would do at these kinds of velocities on varmints?

I never thought about those actually, when I think varmint the first thing that pops into my head is Nos BT but I reckon those match HP's would blow up for sure.

I am now just waiting for my scope and mounts to show up.

Hi everyone I am new on here, I have been reading this thread and I have been loading the nos bt in the 125gn and getting them at around 3900 fps. I have killed dozens of coyotes out to 430yds with that load and at 200yd it tears them in half.

On paper at 100 yards they are within 1/2 moa and sometimes I can get 2 through the same hole. I have also loaded the sierra 150gr boat tail and that does a number on them to I think that it is almost more explosive than the nos bt.

I don’t think you will have any trouble getting 3600 fps with 150gr ballistic tips my 300WBY whips them out at 3625 and 110’s at close to 4000.

A few years back I had a big idea that I would load up some 150 ballistic tips for long-range deer hunting. Ended up shooting one at about thirty yards Eeker wow what a mess that was. Now I just use Partitions or barns

But the 110s were out standing on coons lol

PC I took my 300 Rum to the range yesterday
and shot the box of 180 going about 3250 fps. I really thought the recoil would be worst than it was but it really wasn't bad at all for me. The accuracy was 1.5" at 200 yds. I think the RUM is great. How did yours work out?
I got the BDL 700.

Jay sighted here in this morning and tested loads, both with the 150 gr Nos BT.

First load 106 gr of AR2226 (max) shot a three shot groupd of .291" !! one went through the same hole !! But I had ejecter marks on the brass. (these max loads where hand weighed).

Did some up with 104 gr in a hurry so did not have time to hand weigh and I used the thrower, three shot group of .501"and no ejector marks in the brass, due to being in a hurry as I am heading off next week I have done up a 130 odd of this load. I reckon it would do better with a hand weighed charge and I also reckon I did not shoot as well second time around as the rifle had slammed in to hand and I was bleeding due to not holding it as well as the first session (I was only holding pistol grip and did not have it tucked into my shoulder at al, I was prone and allowed the but to rest on my shooting bag. This load will be more than accurate enough to get me to 500 yards for chest shots on vermin.

I am looking forwards to seeing it vermin !!

I do not have a chrono but loads will be around 3600 fps.

JRO45 yes this was at 100 yards, shot a couple at 25 yards for bore sighting as I have a 20 moa badger base on so it took a bit to get down.

I loaded those shells but haven't them yet. I used a powder that I think will give me the same results H1000. I've used this powder in loads for my 338 RUM and they grouped pretty good. So I hope these will do the same thing will find out soon.
