Picked up my Win 70 6.5X55 today. Had the dealer install a set of Leupold Rings and Bases. Something just looks wrong. I commented on the position of the mounts and was assured that everything was AOK. What do you think?? Backwards, yes, no, maybe?? Thanks

I use one piece bases myself, but the front base may reversed 180 degrees. The real issue is will your scope fit? The cylindrical scope tube (1" or 30 mm)junction with the coned-shaped front objective may interfere with the front ring. If so, turn the front base 180 degrees to position the front ring back further.

It will and should work just fine, put your scope in there and find out. Mark D

I just looked at my Leupold bases, but mine are the quick dismount style and don't look the same. However, neither base intrudes upon the action. I am with you, it appears to me that both bases are reversed, and most assuredly the front one. I shouldn't think that eye relief should be an issue, the turrets will be about in the middle of the action, and there should be clearance for a 39 or 40mm objective. Kudude

Turn them around, your eye piece is going to be flusj w/ the bolt shroud. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

The dude put them on backwards. Those Are reverse front/reverse rear bases. Your dealer doesnt have a clue how a scope mounts. Luckly you didnt give him the scope he probably would have but that on backwards too. Reverse both of those bases and a luepold 2x7 or 3.5 x 10 will fit perfect. They can be installed any way your heart pleases . But for most scopes that aint going to work, Plus it just plain looks stupid, like a idiot but them on backwards. Look at a Luepold catalog or a winchester catalog.

They'll work but they look stupid. Unless I absolutely have to use them I stay away from the reversable mounts. I've got a M70 stainless featherweight short action and I used the leupold silver dual dovetails, they make for a much, much nicer installation than what he's stuck on your rifle.

I have those on my 6.5 x 55 Featherweight... I'd just reverse the front mount and it will look balanced and work fine.. I have a 3 x 9 Matte Leupold with a Target Dot on my 6.5 x 55.... Cheers seafire

Hey Steve, Absolutely amazing! Nice flick which shows your "concern" real well. Depending on the Scope you use, the length between the Rear Eyepiece and where the front of the tube begins to flair "might" require you to: 1. Reverse both Bases(then it would look like it is designed to look). 2. Reverse only the Front Base if it is a short Scope. 3. Reverse only the Rear Base if it is a particularly l-o-n-g Scope. I do hope #1 works for you. Fortunately the 6.5x55 doesn't have a lot of recoil, so even though Reversing them will put the Eyepiece closer to your eye, it "might" not be an issue. If it is, turn them back around and don't tell anyone.

The rear bse is fine - reversing it will cause it to interfere with the bolt lift. The front bases just needs to be reversed, and then it will be set up properly.

That base set is a front reversible. You don't need it. Might be the only base he had.

Like doug said, You might not need that reverse front base. I use it on several of my rifles with luepold scopes though. Im sure many of you guys have bought several different brand bases to see how they fit and for a particular scope aplication. Luepold should make a rear base(standard and Dual dovetail) that is centered like their quick reliese. All they have is that extended reversable rear. Redfield has a nice 2 piece standard base that has a short centered rear base.

As it should be. | |||

Eyepiece flush with the bolt shroud... huh?

You'll find out why next time you shoot prone or sitting. I set up my rifles for practical shooting from field positions. I don't set them up to be comfortable from the bench, and I don't set them up to look "right" according to some conventional wisdom.

Well, you must use some particular rings and fixed power scopes, as many brands (of each) would not physically allow this type of mounting. I practice prone and from sitting plenty (have for years) and have never had a problem with 1-2" of eyepiece hanging out behind the bolt shroud. Even with my various 9.3x62s...
