Ok guy's Santa brought me a 340WBY LaserMark. First .33 caliber that I have owned. How is this 340WBY going to match up against my 300wby. My 180gr bullets at 3300fps. seem to have more energy at 500yrds. than any bullet for the 340WBY. And shoots flatter too. But it looks a 100 times better than that 300WBY FiberMark. hope it shoots as good as it looks. < !--color-->

Well, assuming Nosler's BC's are true, and you can get 3300 w/185g and say 3000 with 225g (same SD) then you have the following (200yd zero):
300W ME 4352 ftlb; 300yd 2930/-5.24"; 500yd 2212/-30.55"
340W ME 4496 ftlb; 300yd 2930/-6.54"; 500yd 2152/-38.60"

Using Swifts in the 300, you get:
300W ME 4352 ftlb; 300yd 3037/-5.11"; 500yd 2358/-29.60"

Keep in mind that all along that trajectory, the 340 is shooting a 10% bigger hole.
But it does seem the 300 will delivery alot of energy downrange, largely because of the high BC. Find a 225 with the same BC and it'll beat it, b/c of starting out a bit faster.
At any rate, these two make a great pair, and that Lazermark isa nice gun.
Merry Christmas to you.

If your 340 is loaded to the same pressure as your 300 and with equally suitable powder it will produce 10% more energy.

It will drive bullets of the same weight about 150 f/s faster than your 300. However, the 300 will be about 150 f/s faster with bullets of equal sectional density.

So, if all else is equal then the 340 will deliver more power from the muzzle and all the way down range but the 300 will shoot ever so slightly flatter.

Mike you must have been a VERY GOOD boy last year! The biggest difference you will notice between the 340 & 300 is the extra stopping power the 340 has on larger game. That larger diameter/heavier weight bullet has an effect on elk moose and bears. I really like the job 225 gr A-frames do in my 340.I don't think you will be disappointed.

Ditto the replies about the 340 vrs the 300 wby. Don't worry about what "energy" charts say. They simply aren't the "final say" in stopping power. That 340 is a "whomper" on the big game just as stated before. I own both and will testify to it's "extra power". I have a buddy that lives in Alaska--the 340 goes with if I go up and hunt with him. One year he kidded me about bringing the big gun along. Then we had a bear take a bag of carribou meat one night. We all decided a gun should "sleep with us" that night. Guess which one was chosen hands down to come inside the tent that night!!??

joecool544 ----- You must have treated Mrs. Claus very good this past year, way to go. I shoot the .340 and have shot the .300's for years, the .340 really shines with the larger bullets and will do things with them the .300's could only dream about. The design of the .338's and the .340's was for the larger bullets pushed fast, as in 225 and 250 grainers. Just as the .300's pushed the 180 an 200 grainers fast. A 225 grain bullet at 3150 fps that my .340 will do with great accuracy is dream for Elk hunters. A 250 grainer at 2950 fps with pinpoint accuracy is what I used on a huge Alaska Yukon Moose, as well as a 5 X 5 Bull Elk and 5 X 5 Mule Deer Buck in 1999. I hope you enjoy your .340 as much as I have my old Sporter Model. Good luck and good shooting.

Phurley Mrs. Claus was treated very well this year she got a big a$$ sun room and more so she is in the giving mood. Do you have any loads worked up over the chronograph for the 340 that you would like to share? The loads for my 300 are 180grs. At 3308fps. And 200grs. At 3128fps. And the loads are right up there and when I do work up loads for the 340 they will be at max or what shoots well. I can hardly wait to shoot an Elk with this thing. I shot an Elk this year with my 300WBY at 513yrds. One shot behind the front shoulder. Its hard for me to believe that this 340 will out do my 300 I may be partial though cause ever thing I have shot with it died with one shot and its killed a lot of Elk. But now I can say that I have every caliber from .257WBY to the340WBY.

.340 WEATHERBY
WHEN you care enough to send the VERY best.

I have been using one for quite a few years and it is a great cartridge.
I found the 250gr Sierra to be the most accurate bullet out of the gun so far. I can shoot ragged holes off the bench if the caffine is down, otherwise I just get 1/2-3/4" out of it.

WOULD recommend a good brake. Mine makes it feel less then a 20ga shotgun according to the RCMP who borrowed it for a caribou a few weeks ago. I have always related it to a HOT .243Win.

In the process of wringing out 225gr North Forks right now. At 100yds they are printing under 1". Hope to get out and stretch them out 500-8 or 900 yds over the next week if the snow quits and the wind stays down.

I can move the 250s over 3000fps w/o a problem but I use a Shepherd scope so I load to the scope profile which using the 250 Gameking moves it out at 2820fps.

I've got loads from 210gr up.

Anyway, congrats on the .340, you WILL make it your favorite all around rifle.

IF you want some of my loads email me and I'll send them to you

Use that 340 to drive heavy for calibre bullets then you will see it shine over the 300. You might want to check out the woodleigh .338 cal 300 gr soft nose you will have a great penetrator and heaps of momentum, velcoity will be a tad slower but that will mean better penetration due to increased bullet integrity. Use the power of that big case to drive a heavier bullet not a lighter bullet faster.

As you may have guessed I am a heavy & slow advacote

If I was in bear country, there would be no question whatsoever that my rifle would be in the tent with me, a round in the chamber and bolt 90% closed.

joecool544 ----- I have two favorite loads for my .340, a 225 grain North Fork load with 88 grains RL-19, 215M primer. It chronographs at an average of 3050 fps. The second is a 240 grain North fork with 87 grains RL-19, same primer. It cronographs at 3000 fps on average. These loads give me one hole accuracy with three shots, when I gave a good day pulling the trigger and pointing the rifle. I hunt with the 240 grain load, it is awesome on Elk. Good shooting.
