Can anyone tell me the overall LOADED length on the .338 RUM. I can find the case length but not the loaded length. Thank You

I load them so they're about .020" -.030" shorter tan the tightest spot on the mag well. You have to load the mag up to see which round position is tightest though. Cock the round up and down to be sure it's not to tight. Most factory barrels you "likely" will not touch the rifling at this length. A Stoney Point OAL Gauge or a sized case with its neck split to the below the shoulder will tell you for sure. On the split case, just squeeze it hard enough that the throat and rifling don't pull it back out and leave the bullet seated long, insert and close bolt slowly, remove and measure. Do it a few times to be sure of your readings. A dremel tool and cutoff wheel works great to split the neck lengthwise. I never use the book OAL on rifles. I never crimp them either, even on my 416wby.

Brent, The reason I was asking is that a friend of mine has an action (Mauser 98) that he was wanting to get barreled for the .338RUM

Wyojoe. I'm sorry, but I think you can forget that cartridge in a '98. I seat my bullets for my 338 RUM on a AOL: 91,3MM, not unlike a 375H&H. Go for a 330 Dakota intead, on that action. I'm planning to do so for a cousin of mine.

3.600 is the factory length. On my custom rifle with a standard chamber most bullets are seated out to 3.68, which is .015" from the rifling. 3.69 will fit the factory magazine.

WyoJoe, I see. What is the mag length? What bullet would he be throating it to? [ 01-05-2003, 04:40: Message edited by: Brent Moffitt ]
