Norseman: You apparently have had no experience in reforming brass from one cartridge size to another. If .300 RUM is run through a .338 RUM resizing die, two things will happen: The neck will be expanded by the expander nipple to the appopriate size for a .338 bullet, and the shoulder will be pushed back to the correct dimension for a .338 RUM. Simply trimming a few one-hundredths from the case will result in brass that is identical to .338 RUM.

I could be mistaken, but i recall if you run a .300 RUM through a .338 resizing die, you get a .338 edge, not a .338RUM. The .338 RUM shoulder is set farther back, from the base to the shoulder the .338 Rum is 2.29, whereas the .300 Rum is 2.3873. Remington did this for a couple reasons, i believe to differentiate from the Canadian magnums, and also that a .300 Rum would not chamber in a .338 Rum. My .02

When .300 RUM brass is run fully into a .338 RUM die "The neck will be expanded by the expander nipple to the appopriate size for a .338 bullet, and the shoulder will be pushed back to the correct dimension for a .338 RUM." Hasn't anybody here ever reformed brass, or is this a completely lost art on those born subsequent to the baby boomers? I suppose that a whole generation of us who had no choice in feeding 8x57 Mausers other than to reform .30-06 brass (virtually identical in relationship to forming .338 RUM from .300 RUM) must have a better grasp of this process.

Thank you for the clarification, I was not aware that an actual .338 RUM resizing die could be used to resize .300 RUM brass into .338 RUM. Further, I misread your post and assumed (which one most certainly hates too) that you were referring to an expander-ball that opened a .300 RUM to .338, which in turn produced the .338 edge. So to be clear and if I understand you correctly, I can resize from .300 RUM to .338 RUM in one fell swoop with a full length sizing die?

thank's for the information and corrections. Yes I have never reformed brass, I always think forward not backwards. I was just thinking all those year's that I was handed free 300 Winchester Magnum brass but always turned around gave them to other friends because I thought you couldn't make a 7mm Remington Magnum out of them because I "thought" the brass was too long and shoulder angle was too far foward. Hell I thought that's why the 7mm STW was created!!!
Gerry I found several bags of 300 and 338 RUM locally, PM me (or anyone else) that is in need of some. I can pick em up and mail em to you guys. I THINK there were 5-6 bags of 338, and at least 4 bags of 300, and also about 5 bags of 7mm.
If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!
