Gang I need some advice.I have a newly aquired Browning BBR in 270 with a 24 inch barrel that I'm looking for real world data for.
On hand I have IMR 4350,RL 19,H380,Varget and RL 22 that I use in other calibers.I have decided on a 130 grain bullet for a whitetail load as I have several boxes of 130 Speer BTSPs and 130 Nosler Partitions that came with the rifle.
Not new to reloading just new to the 270.

Point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance,
Howard

In my 270 those 130 grain Partitions sure work good with RL22. I have a 24 inch barrel also.

Start with 52gr of IMR 4350 and work up.

Save the RL 22 for 150gr bullets.

i agree with n e 450. imr 4350 is what i use with 130gr partitions, and it works! very accurate in my 24" barrel model 700, never found a bullet. but there are as many different (and good) powders available. you might look at the reloading thread as i'm sure there are lots of loads folks use and like. good luck.

The 4350, RL19 and 22 will work fine, I think I would try the RL19 or 4350 first.

+1 for RL 19 I get better velocity with no pressure signs in my rifle. Accuracy is extremely good. My load is a max charge of RL 19 under a 130 TSX with a Federal primer. I have a 26 inch number 5 contour barrel. It's always under an inch at 3200 fps. You should work up. You should be able to get a real good load with either the 4350 or RL 19. The RL 22 should be used with 140 or 150 grain bullets in my humble opinion. DW

Thanks for the input.Figured 4350 and RL19 would get me in the ballpark.Have loaded both in 280 and 06 over the years with good results.
Use the RL22 in 300 Win Mag but recently have seen some intresting data on it's performance in the 06 with 165 Accubonds (which is the next project Smiler

No input on the Speer 130 BTSPs though?

Howard, I have loaded many 270s over the years. I do not recall ever having a problem with finding an excellent, repeatable load with IMR4350 or Re19. You asked us to point you in the right direction. I would be failing you if I didn't suggest you get a 4831, either H or IMR, even though the other powders you named (Re19, 22, IMR4350, and Varget) will all work well.

I would imagine that if you asked anyone who's got a 270 what the number one suggested powder is, it will be 4831, and I'm betting H4831SC would be the top choice.

So, all that said, I can still say that I could live w/o 4831 in a 270 b/c I've got so many other kickass loads with other powders that there's just no room for improvement.

I could definitely manage with IMR4350! Big Grin Here's my most recent load with this powder. 150 Berger VLD, 215M primer, Win brass, 51.0 IMR4350. 0.137" 3 shot.

I have 2, 270's, a Model 70 winchester 24", and a 700 Remington Sendero, 26". The Model 70 likes a top load of 4350, in fact I use the suggested TOP load in cartridges of the world book. Excellent 3 shot groups with 130 Ballistic Tips. In the Sendero it likes IMR4831, in this one I get over 3300fps, with a 130 grain anything. My all time favorite cartridge, and I have killed game with the 130 whatever, from elk to Prairie dogs. Jack O'Connor had it right.

My "go to" 130 gr .270 load for over 35 years now is 55 gr IMR 4350 in my Rem 700. That's been used with Hornaday, Speer, Sierra, Remington, and Nosler.

Htduck, youve been given lots of good advice. ive used all powdersthat you have mentioned and all have worked well. but, H4831 with the Horn 130 old cup and core and the Nosler solid base 130 shoot better than any combination that ive tried. must be magic to work so well in so many rifles.

To be quite honest, I have loaded for several .270's through they years, and have not found issues finding a good to outstanding load in any of them. I have used powders from IMR-3031 up through RL-25 and in several bullet weights. The hardest thing for me was generally deciding which bullet to use over the other. If the loads would not group it was generally something due to the stock rather than the loads being tried.

Enjoy your new rifle.

of the powders you mentioned i use 4350 with 54 grs with the 130s.. 4350 & RL-19 for the 130s.. do not try varget or 380 to low density.. RL-22 for the heaver bullets

Saving RL-22 for "heavier" bullets is bad advice. RL-22 is near the burn rate of H-4831 which is the classic powder for the 270. RL-22 works just great with 130gr and 140 gr bullets in the 270 Winchester.

A 200yd Group from a Beretta Mato and 140gr Accubonds:

This rifle has a 24" barrel.

From my Sako Finnlite this rifle has a 20 7/8" barrel.

Note this is a 300yd group.

Good velocities and excellent accuracy can be expected with RL-22 in the 270 Winchester. I haven't tried it with 110gr bullets but it works great with the 130's and 140's...........................DJ

....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................
