I bought a NEW Weatherby MV .340 and have fired about 15 rounds. Shoots very nice groups, kicks a little bit though. NOW THE DEAL - every Weatherby mag I've ever seen has three gas ports in the bolt, this one does not. The Weatherby rep. was in town the other day so I went by and asked him why the .340 has no gas ports in the bolt. He scratched his head for a minute then asked if I could show him the gun. I did and he took the rifle from me and said he was sending it back to the factory (safty concern) claiming ALL Weatherbys mags have gas ports in the bolt. If this is true, then how in the hell could a rifle maker forget to add the ports to the bolt and then the gun make it out of the factory and then out of the gun store and into my hands?

My guess: One just slipped through quality control. It happens. Space Shuttles have been known to explode and burn up too. No system is perfect. (No disrespect meant to the families of the astronauts that died in the shuttle disasters. I do live in Houston so I know a little about NASA.) -Bob F.

Weatherby's are not the gun some think they are. While this could happen to any company it's not surprising to me that it happens to Weatherby.....quality control don't seem to exist there. I also read once that someone got a new weatherby with the target and all but there was no hole in the barrel.....I can't verify this story so it must be discarded as not likely true......but it stuck with me anyway. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I did see a Win.model 94 years ago in Vermont that had no rifling in the barrel. The shop owner had handed it to me with a smile and it took me a few minutes to find.Completly finished and proof marked. These things happen -not often. Glenn

I remember reading years ago that Weatherby actually xray there MkV actions in the quality control process in search of any metalurgy faults that may exist. That impressed me. But they must be losing the plot now. No gas ports on an action, test targets for a barrel with no hole in it.Do you think Ferrari or Corvette would send out a car to the customer without a windscreen, crank, cylinder head without exhaust ports or breaks? would not happen.I dont even think that would happen with a Ford. Weatherby need a good kick up the ass.

Real time x-ray is pretty common. Getting someone who dosen't fall asleep at the screen is not. The rule of thumb is roughly 80% of what you have PEOPLE check for on an assembly line will get caught if they are doing 100% inspection. In other words even 3 people in series checking for the same thing will let 1% get by. I've only had their Vangard (Howa) and I think it is a darn good rifle for the money. Wish they would lengthen the barrel on the magnums though.
