Ms. Ann sent me a link to try to post photos. This is my best 5 shot group ever. 280 Grain Swift A-frame Speed 2662 USRA’s Model 70 Custom Shop .358 STA 100 yards This is the load I killed my buck with posted in the North American Sub Forum. This is the load that is going cow elk hunting with me in 3 weeks, and I will most likely take for Red Stag in Austria next September.

Nice...I suspect you pulled the highest shot. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Your lack of load details is like a vacuous chasm.

I am sorry, but I do not share data on line. The top shot was the first shot. I am sure I pulled it. Mike Dettore, I appreciate your help with reloading. This is as much your group as mine. The cases are from new, Quality Cartridge (now on back order). The primer is F215match. The powder H-4831 with the A-Square Any Shot You Want, Hodgon website, and Nosler manuals to get to loads. I have went faster, but have settled here for now. I would like to use RL-22, but cannot find any. Velo is the average of five shots measured in my Magneto speed. There is a gentleman here who has done a lot with the 358 STA that has listed load charges. If it helps, these manuals show a max load of either 90 or 88.5 grains. Any Shot lust 90 with a 275 grain bullet, Nosler 88.5 with a 250 grain bullet, and Hodgon 90 with a 250 grain bullet. AFrames, I am told create higher pressure. Thus, I reduced the max charge of 90 by 5 percent which is 85.5 and went from there. Mike Dettore also showed me an easy way to measure for the lands.

See? That wasn't so hard.

I am not going to give a load. Not because I want to be a jerk and not share. I do not need folks using it, or saying they used it, things go wrong and come find me. That 85.5 is below the Nosler minimum load with 250 grain bullet. My velo was obtained with 280 grain load. 85.5 is not the load, but maybe a place for others start ax I did. I warn anyone against using this process in your gun as this is guess work with no pressure testing to back it up. Is the STA in the Woodleigh manual? CFE223 may be a good powder. I know folks report 2300 fps with 275 grain weldcore with that powder in the 35 Whalen. However, I have no manuals that show that powder with 35 Whelen. So, I will never try. Retumbo, I have a lot of that, but no one has data published using Retumbo and STA to do anything with. Make your own cartridges in fear and trembling.

A elk has a large kill area. Should not have a problem placing a bullet with that load into to it.

Nice! There's not a lot a 280 grainer at almost 2700 fps won't accomplish on this planet. The STA is a fantastic, if underappreciated, caliber. I'm glad it was SAAMI certified and components are (reasonably) available. _____________________________________________________ No safe queens!

It actually is not SAAMI approved. I looked it up. https://saami.org/wp-content/u...-14-Posting-Copy.pdf It is only in the Nosler manual bc Chub Eastman was friends with Simpson, and Chun Eastman worked for Nosler.

Congrats on a great group with your STA. Both my rifles will shoot three shots touching when the shooter has a good day pulling the trigger for me my son and grandsons. I strive to repeat groups like that before calling it a done load using 225, 250, or 270 grain Northforks. The only other bullet I shoot with the STA’s is the 280 grain Swift A-Frame. Which is accurate but not accurate as the Northforks. I use three shot groups on Magnum and five shot groups on all other chamberings. I consider the .358 STA the mid magnum that is hard to beat in the field. My son and I have both taken several Elk and I have taken it to Alaska, Canada, and Africa. Good Shooting. phurley
