I am once again in search of a reputable smith to install claw mounts on the existing bases of my 1926 custom Mauser. Which of course is missing the mounts when brought back as booty in WWII

Thanks all..

I'm not sure where you are in SoKal. but drop by Duncan guns in San Marcos, ask for Laszlo, tell him Fred J. in OC sent you. http://www.yellowpages.com/info-LMS53323732/Duncans-Gun...?from=xmlapi_MSN2-01
Laszlo can make anything & has done several claw mounts on some doubles & a few bolt guns that I hae seen. Great guy doing very good work for a decent price.

Installing new claw rings into old bases seldom comes out as anticipated. The difference in fit and finish is quite noticeable. I suggest you consider having new bases installed to match the rings, and having them all rust blued to give a closer appearance to the pre-war bluing on the rifle.

A steel scope would also blend nicer, as the anodized aluminum ones of recent years are a rich black color that isn't a very good match.

If you are using claw mounts, you also have to very selective regarding the scope objective. The front ring will go around it. Straight tubes are the easiest. If you chose one with an objective bell, the front ring will have to be an exact fit. Choose a scope that has an available ring. Also, many US scopes have a short bell, with very little room for the ring. You want to avoide having to mount the ring in the exact location as the front lens.

It's on the receiver.. I would think being mounted there a standard tube mounting position would work??

Yes the standard "ring on the tube" should work.

It should be no problem for a gunsmith that knows how to fit claw mounts to fit a set of rings to your mounts, unless they are some kind of weird bases. Not a job for a "regular" gunsmith, butthe hard part, fitting the bases to the rifles is already done.

What calibre is your Mauser, I would guess it is a 8x57??? Is it a .318 bore or a .323?

I have had Gary Stiles do work for me. He was making claw mounts to fit existing bases on a rifle he had in his shop at the time. Pretty amazing to see. He can do what you are after.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned NECG. They have and install all types of claw.

Note,Take it for what it's worth.
The last set of QD bases that JJ installed for one of my customers was sub standard.

I hate to hear about your experience with NECG. I would be interested in the details. They have never done work for me but I get a lot of parts from them.
It is sad but about 75% of my outsourced work comes back sub standard or totally worthless. A lot of these company's are living on the reputation of smiths before them and the blowing of there own horn.

Another person is Duane Wiebe that can do your work. I don't know if he can or will. With his new company (Sound Metal Products) and his workload I assume he is real busy.

J Bennet... You too have PM.. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to buy parts from them. They are the best source around for parts... But I would pass on service.. i totaly agree about living on past reputation..

I would like to thank those that responded to my request for claw mount smithing services.. Would I be able to impose on you gentlemen who have had claws made, post photo’s and close up’s of the actual fitted claws and mounts… Sorry to say, but after my previous trials having a set made, I’m somewhat gun shy.. (pardon the pun)

I sent my drilling to JJ to have him fit and install this Zeiss that i sent along with the gun...

I just got it back last week, but it looks like a good job to me, and it "clicks" on and off just like the other scope and mount i have for this gun...

I'll check the sight in soon, and harvest a deer or two in a few weeks...
