See here, the .338 Federal.

I know a lot of people are excited about the 338 Federal. It is a good hunting cartridge... But the Federal 308 180 Nosler Partition has more velocity and energy at 300 and 400 yards than the 338 Federal.
It is hard to beat the 308 in a short action.

Still most game is shot under 250 yards, and the 338 Federal with the 210 Nosler Partition would be a great killer no doubt.

I have not paid much attention to the ACCU Bond bullets from Nosler... but a 180 grain Accubond, looks like a good bullet for that round...

But taking a look at the ballistics chart that is linked in the article...I can see a 200 yd downloaded potential to duplicate the old 33 Winchester, which was not a bad round....

We all don't need 4000 fps MV and 3500 ft/lbs at the Muzzle... to take 500 yd shots.. when most deer are killed at 100 yds or less....

Now if someone loads a 270 bullet in the 308 case, we should have the 308 family covered... ( until you find ONE guy that wants a 8mm/308....)....

I see this choice for we hunters as a good thing.. a lot more practical than the WSSMs and the WSM/ SRAUM...cases...

NO DOUBT!!! I've killed 26 deer with a Ruger M77 Ultralight in .308 Win shooting 165 gr. Sierra Gamekings ( Part Number 2140 which are Matchkings with a four pedal nose---THEY ARE EXPLOSIVE, BTW!!! ). It was a killing machine!!! I KNEW that when I pulled the trigger, the deer in the scope was a goner!!!

Sad thing was that I sold it , because I literally "outgrew" the rifle. I'm 6'2" now.
