Ran some 110 grain VMAX's out of a 300SAUM today and checked the speed!!! 3813fps!!!! Bullets made the trip to the tune of .480/100! (5)!! Now to test them at longer range and then on a live varmint!!!! I'll bet they'll give some "acrobatics"!!!! Albeit, watching the impact isn't quite as easy as the .204 is!!! But some of them ought to take a while to finish and you should still see the end of the show!!! GHD Groundhog Devastation(GHD)

How quickly do you guys burn barrels out?

Now who's got the magnum bug??? (grin) Difficulty is inevitable Misery is optional

HP, Last "burned out" barrel had 12,416 rounds thru it......a 222MAG sporter barrel!!! But I was younger then, didn't know proper cleaning techniques and such!!! As far as the "Short Magnums" go, I haven't got a clue as to what to expect!!! I'm hoping for 2400-3000 before it needs a "saw off the threads, recut, saw off an inch on the front end and recrown!!!" The .204 that has generated so much posting the last few days?......bout like the 222MAG barrel!!!! I've run it to 4565fps!!! No need for that!!! 4100-4250 will get the job done with ENOUGH ACCURRACY TO SUIT ME! "How dead is dead"? Now Just C!!!!! You knew from my initial testing of the SAUM cases two years ago that it was just a matter of time until I had a HEAVY barrel in one of them!!!! I still think it's a superior case design over the WSM's!!! It may go "obsolete" soon but that's REMINGTONS fault!!! Should have introduced them instead of the "RUM'S"!!!!!!!! Then the "obsolete" nomenclature would have been relegated to the "WSM'S"!!!! I know it's not a varmint round but I couldn't help myself!!!! Going to have to show up and shoot against "BOYD" I guess!!!! Will post a pic of the first varmint that falls to a 110VMAX or a 125 SPEER TNT with it!!! If it's a crow I may need to post two or three pics to get the pieces in!!!! GHD Groundhog Devastation(GHD)

you may try the 125gr NBT as well. I couldn't get the TNT to even come close in accuracy in the 30-06,..there was far less fouling which makes me think it is just a bit undersized for my barrel. I saw an article last month in Precision Shooting where they built a 7mmSAUM and were very impressed with it as a 1000yd caliber. Said they thought the SAUM case to be just a bit more efficient than the WSM. I am toyinh with SAUM ideas for the next competition barrel. Difficulty is inevitable Misery is optional

GHD, I don't think a 300 Magnum of any kind will reach 3000 rounds with the type of accuracy (1 MOA at 600 yds) that I expect. It might if your accuracy demands are not that stringent. A 222 Mag is basically a 223 Rem, is it not?

JustC, My subscription to "PS" ran out and I din't renew it so I didn't see the article you are referring to!!! Do you remember our convrsations from 2 years ago about the "most usable, reloader friendly, able to wildcat" case design? It's the SAUM'S!!!! No doubt!!! HP, The 222MAG and 223Rem were both designs of a Remington engineer named Mike Walker. He had been charged with the task of designing a case to function in a "small arms automatic rifle" for the military. He designed the two cartridges had guns built for them and due to the shoulder angle and short neck of the .223 funtioning better thru the said rifles it was adapted and used for the military. NOW EVERYBODY HAS ONE!!! Except me!!! Because I own a rifle chambered on a SUPERIOR case design for use in a BOLT RIFLE!!!! The 222MAG has been from the get go superior(albeit it was less than 100fps in the velocity department) and in the accurracy department(you ever see a .223 at a BR match?) NO!!! But you may have found a few .222MAGS there back in the late 60's or early 70's!!! Then somebody got the GREAT IDEA to "neck the .222MAG up to 6mm.........The birth of the 6x47!!!" If old Palmisano and Pendall hadn't come out with their "PPC's" the 6x47 would still be winning!!! And the .204 (I can't print the last part of the name so I just call it the .204!!!!) will fall right in to the mix of SUPERIOR chamberings based on the .222MAG!!!! Very nice!!!!....good, easy going and easy to reload for cartridge....not a Pdog load, but a deffinite whistle pig ventilator at a reduced rate of fire. Nice to know that the VMax tolerates the high velocity too. Good shooting! HS

GHD, been seriously tinkering with a SAUM chambering. I am thinking my 30" 1:9 twist straight blank (Gary Schneider) would make for a kewl 7mmSAUM project. Difficulty is inevitable Misery is optional

JustC, I think you ought to try that one out!!!! 65 grains of powder vs. the 100 grains yo've been toying with???? Not to mention the accurracy capabilities of the 7mm projectiles!!!! I think it would be fun to have a weeklong gettogether of us accurracy nuts!!! First day we'd only use rimfires...shoot what you brung!!!..the 17HMR would win that day handsdown!!!! Second day we'd all shoot the 19's and 20's. Third day we'd get into the .224's. 4th day would be the day of the 6's!!! 5th day would be the "quarterbores" and the light 6.5's.(and this one scares m e a bit becuase I think the results may tend to cant toward the .260Remington over the various 25's!!! including my all time favorite the 25-06!!!! 6th day we'll bring out the 7's!!!!All of them!!! Short fat ones, long ones with the damned rim on them, necked down ones from somtin else.....any of them....all 7's!!! last day at the gathering would include the 30's ......at least for 1/2 the day.......can't stand to shoot them for too long!!! And then we just may have to extend the gathering for on more day..........ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE!!!! Shoot varmints till you're tired of it!!! Looking forward to that day(WEEK)!!
