I'm not a spear hunter either but I enjoy looking at Indian artifacts which include spearheads.

Here's a pretty nice one found in Morgan Co, Ohio.

I decided it would be cool to learn how Indians actually made them and the flintknapping bug bit me/

Some of my early stuff. I'm a good bit better at it now. Guess I need to take some pics of my more recent play.

Looks like you have some interesting stuff. I would love to see some more pictures. My relatives owned a farm in Southern Ohio. They found several Indian items over the years. I saw what I think were hammers or hatchets made of stone. I remember multiple arrow heads. Of course none of them made it to my side of the family.

no no, I ain't from Ohio. I just bowhunt there.

The point in the pic belongs to a friend of mine up there. He has lots of em but that's one of the nicest.

I made this 5.5 inch Dovetail knife about 6 years ago using heat treated Coastal Plains chert. It was one of many I sold to art collectors. All of my points and knives were made from material that was out of context for the point type. I didn't want anyone to get burned on buying a reproduction. This knife measured 5.5 inches and was in the 1st stages having only one resharpening. As further resharpening would occur, it would exhibit more pressure flaking scars and reduce in both length and width with the exception of the basal area.

I am so very envious of your skills. I have all the equipment, but I can't make a point turn out the way I want. I keep making things rounder or I end up with square edges.

How long did it take you practicing before you could make a functional point or blade?

Frank, they say it takes about a ton of flint to get to the point that you can produce good pieces. I found that to be fairly accurate in most cases. Rarely have I witnessed anyone getting to that point in short order. Some people seem to have a natural born ability but most require a year or more to master the art. I recommend getting yourself some books and video's. That will jump start the process. Contact Mark Bracken at: http://www.flintknappingtools.com/
Mark carries lots of info and tools, including some high quality flints. Be sure to hold off buying any good flint until you can keep from turning it into dust.
