I am looking for some photos of boar spear heads or blades.

I would like these to use to show to a custom knifemaker so he can make me one or two.

Any photos nicely showing the spear heads and cross-bars etc appreciated. Thanks.

I'm sure you've seen the Cold Steel design:

Funny, when I did a search the "authentic" medieval spear heads did not have cross-pieces. Maybe they were separate.

Medieval Boar Spear

Maybe you should talk to this guy:

Nitrox,

Take a look at this old post, Boar spear designs it has some information that you should find useful.
If you do make the spear make sure to post some pictures.

Cheers,

Nsiro

Charles

All the paintings of mediaeval boar spears I have seen plus in museums etc have a separate cross-guard. The Cold Steel one is the only one I have seen with it integral.

Thanks for the replies.

Where I hunt you can sometimes get quite close to the hogs, especially at dusk. I thought about picking up the Cold Steel spear but have too many other priority projects at the moment. Be sure and post pictures/reports when you get your project going.

Charles

I tried to buy some Cold Steel boar spears as I also really want their samburu javelins. I think the javelins would work very well once one trained in their use.

But I was told there is some export approval form required for the USA. I was shipping a rifle out and got the export approval for that, but spears required a different one from another department and it turned out too hard.

Still would like to give it a second try though. Anyone know the details of apporval for exporting these oh so modern weapons of war?

I will poke around and see if I can find out what the export issue is, but no promises I will figure it out.

Another option you have locally is the (later period) lance head from Century Arms:

I'm sure you have seen them -- not quite the same flavor as the medieval spear but on sale now at only US$50.

Take it off the shaft. Then you're exporting a stick and a centerpunch.

Have a look at this link:

This is quite a good price, not sure about the import restrictions of course!
I have a picture of the same in a catalog here, so if you want a better image, PM me and I will e-mail it to you, or photocopy and post it if the resolution is no good.
There was a website of a crazy yank who was into boars spearing, will try and find it again. I think he used a terrier to piss them off and charge him.
Cheers,
TOM

Another option:

They do export the spear heads, but not the shafts due to shipping costs.

Gentleman,

Back when you posted I had a look at some of these suggestions. However some seem more decorative than practical, without personally being able to examine them.

Charles,

Actually I bought some "black" bamboo roots today to plant. The shafts of these when they multiply may make ideal shafts for an English style boar lance. Tougher and thicker than the usual bamboo we have.
