Anyone on here using the Berger vld hunting bullets for their backpack/sheep rifles? Any experience with these bullets is appreciated.

I used a 185 VLD on my Utah moose hunt in 2010. The bullet performed great and put the moose down. I really like the bullets.

I use 168gr bullets and have killed both elk, deer, antelope with one shot kills out to 500 yards. Most bullets passed through but the ones that I have found have had good weight retention. Have not experienced hitting bone or shooting through shoulders.

I'm using them in a LW custom 270 WSM. They have been shooting half-MOA out to 842 yards.
Back injury ended my big game hunting this year, but they were hell on the marmots, out to 592 yards, last year.

Buglemintoday,

If I were climbing way up in the mountains my bullet would be some special one.

For blasting a deer broadside in Texas or for that matter here in New England I waited for this big buck to turn sideways at 280 yards.

The 30-06's 155 Berger Vld 'Hunting' hammered him.

Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says.

When we go to the doctor they ask us what lens we like!

Do that with your optics.

I've used VLD's for sheep, elk, brown bear and ibex. Never fails to perform.

I've decided to try the 150 gr. in my .270 WSM.
Those bullets seem to be as scarce as hens teeth but I finnaly have a box on order. I can find the 130's locally but want 150's. While I'm a confirmed Partition/Northfork user, I decided to try 'em. I'm sure they'd perform ok on sheep & probably caribou. Not confident about trying one on a moose or large bear tho.

Cobrad - Could you post or send me your load data including OAL? Would appreciate it.
Thanks.

I used the 30 cal 185vld on a western Antelope hunt mainly for the long range characteristics. My belief is they are devastating on soft tissue but contact with heavy bone in my opinion could be a problem. I found shredded jacket peaces in my goat and that was a heavy bullet on a medium lightly built animal. Shot with 30-06 at 300 yds

Bear in FB, My OAL is 2.812. This is touching the lands in my rifle. I am using 61.8 gr. H4831SC. Bullet is the 140 gr. Berger Hunting VLD. Chrono says 3080 fps. but to match my field results I am using a velocity figure of 3180. This is not a max load according to my Hodgden manual, but max loads produce a sticky bolt in this rifle.
