Picked up a Sig 1911 (4-1/4" barrel) that I will carry while hunting this fall. I'd like to buy a leather outside the waistband holster, probably carry in condition 1. I'm a big fan of Galco. Recommendations?

Have,nt carried a 1911, but a 5" 629 in a galco phoenix, thumb break holster worn cross draw right under the waist band of a pack seemed pretty comfortable. Tried carrying the same gun with a nylon belt and holster cross draw, never did get comfortable with it.
1 1/2 " Galco belt, Galco holster, world of difference...

I used this for my SW 44mag and loved it because it was big enough to latch onto my backpack waist belt. They make other models for different guns.

February through the end of July, I carried my 1911 in my Milt Sparks BN55, OWB holster, 1-2x per week, 3-9 miles, in conjunction with my Eberlestock Gunslinger II back pack; 30 to 55 lbs. I then competed in a 24hr Sniper Adventure Challenge, covering 35 miles in 7,000' No. Utah mountains carrying the same pack loaded to 60 lbs, in 26.5 hours. The holster did very well and since the waist belt is above your pants belt, the two don't interfere with each other.

I've been OC'ing daily for 3+ years here in Utah using the same holster/1911 and have never had an issue with comfort, security or ability to draw quickly. Even though my gun's finish is now very worn the holster is still snugly holding the firearm. My 1911 is an Ed Brown Special Forces. I wouldn't just trust any holster to pack it in.

Yaqui Belt Slide Holster from Galco, carried as a crossdraw if you are carrying a rifle strong side.

Just recently purchased a Blackhawk for my sig 1911 and am happy with it. Don't know how too post pic on here but would be happy too send you pics some other way.

A lot depends on how much stuff you have on your waist or if your wearing a backpack.

I carry a lot in a pancake style holster and prefer some type of positive retention thumb strap etc..

When carrying a pack a good shoulder holster gets it up and out of the way or a chest holster.


Depending on the terrain and level of activity ATVing etc.. I even attach a lanyard to my pistols if things are rough and very active.

I have no desire to search miles of forest for a dropped hand gun

When in the field, and especially if I am wearing a pack, I always use a crossdraw holster.

I have given up on belt carry for a handgun with a pack. I tried quite a few different things, and just couldnt figure out how to be comfortable with a pack belt and a belt holster.


Tried the pistol on the pack belt for a while, which was comfortable, but of course left the pistol on the pack whenever I took it off, and had it flopping around on the ground during rest breaks and so forth.

I have ended up just pocket carrying a .38 J frame when I am backpacking or hunting. Its not a lot of gun, but it is out of the way and always on me, and out of sight.

If I stop for gas or go to a diner or something, it is right there, and when I am in the field it doesnt interfere with my pack belt or bang on a slung rifle.

Not really a secondary hunting weapon, but an easy way to carry a defense weapon at any rate.

Definitely interested to hear what has worked for other folks!

Sig C 3 appendix carry or a chest holster from 7x leather.

I am right handed and use a left handed holster behind the hip on the right side. Fits into the space between the pack, pack belt and the right side of my back.

I have tried carrying a handgun in a variety of ways while carrying a pack such as hip, leg, rear belt, clothing pockets, pack belt pockets, etc. I have also tried to use hammerless .38s on the trail in an attempt to compromise for comfort. The system linked below has worked very well for me and I can highly recommend for carrying a .44 magnum (4"). It works equally well with the pack on or off so it is versatile:

I prefer a tactical-type leg holster if I'm wearing any kind of back pack or other gear worn around the upper body. When properly adjusted for length of drop they can be configured to stay out of the way of the rest of your gear and can be quite comfortable. If you are also carrying a rifle---shouldered on your strong side---the hoster can be adjusted to stay clear of the butt of your rifle. There are many very good ones available.

I'm a fan of the 55BN as well.

Kirkpatrick Leather make a pretty good copy with the TSS and they often have them in stock. I've been using one for several months now and like it.

Another option, one I prefer when carrying a pack, is the Hill People Gear kit bag. I use the runner's bag. They work great for lot's of things, not just carry:
