Food : adding a little something
Working up to a sheep backpack hunt this fall.

Looking for ideas / suggestions / tips & tricks, to turn Mountain House or similar into something a tad better. Just to make it a bit nicer in the evening.

Have Soy Sauce and Franks already...

Frostbit
Macadamia nuts at 2 ounces in ziploc bags for dessert. 400 much needed calories and a great treat.

Have a close look at the package weight compared to calories provided in the meal. I have found many MH bland and not that filling.
I have had better luck with Backpacker's Pantry, for a higher calorie, more flavourful meal for the package weight.
Try some at home, rather than choking down something questionable in the mountains.
I like to have a few squares of dark chocolate in a ziploc bag, with some hot chocolate or hot apple cider mix after supper.

Garlic power and some other spices stay away from MH eggs among some the worse food I ever had

I would toss in quite a few of designer flavored Tuna packets, teriyaki hot & spicy, lemon & pepper , etc. Salami or Jerky with cheese is pretty tasty around noon with a tortilla . A couple bagels for the first meal or two for on the way in. A Gravy packet & MH potatoes can make the most mundane MH main course taste OK. Food on backpack hunt is about calorie intake and weight. If can get by with Cem tabs to treat water rather than a pump you can carry more food such as the above. Starbuks now sells great instant coffee in small packets that are a must have for me at dawn.

Another definite yes vote for the Starbucks Via singles instant coffee.
You could also put some of your favourite spice blends from home in small ziploc bags. Steak spice for sheep tenderloin or back straps is a must.

after three days stuck in the tent with snow blowing that was a delicacy ... on another note you can add some garlic mashed potatoes idaho and it will add flavor and remove the liquid side.

I also limit freeze
Dried to just my evening meal. Lunch is always smoked salmon on bagels with cream cheese. Nothing gets the engine running like salmon does. It's a super food.
