Hello all, My first time posting in this part of AR. I was led to posting here after a pair of Vasque Skywalk hiking boots finally leaked after 9 years of moderate + use and one resoling. I was looking at the Danner Boot thread last night and thought that this would be the place to ask on recommendations for a replacement. I hunt east but would like to get out west at some point. I'm kinda thinking along the lines of a mid to heavy hiking boot to replace these. I prefer waterproof full leather. Gore-Tex lining would be a plus but not a must if the leather were truely waterproof. I hope that's enough of a look at what I'm looking for. What would you guys recommend as a good replacement? Thanks, LC

Hi I got a pair of Spanish Chiruca Skandinavia Hunting boots a couple of years ago. I like them a lot. That are on the heavy and thick side, but I use mine in winter as well as sommer. So far they are waterproof. They have gtex and kevlar caps over the toe and heel to protect the leather and membrane. A Picture: http://www.steggen.no/index.php?c_=ShopProductPopupGUI&...Id=21&productId=9029 Johan There's plenty of room for all God's creatures. Right next to the mashed potatoes.

Lowa Tibet and Lowa Sheephunters. Good luck trying to wear these out where you hunt. If you decide to really get after it forget "hunting" or "hiking" boots of any make. Look at true mountain boots. There are many brands, check out www.mountaingear.com. Get up and move.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll give them a look. Do you find that these boots are tough and long lasting?

Scarpa, meindl, la sportiva, garmont and so on. Just pic one that fits your feet best. For wet climate like here in Iceland, gore-tex liner in a leather boot is needed. For winter use just a leather boot is ok. I find non leather boots just dont last as long as leather boots here because of sharp rocks and lava. So when I advise beginers in my SAR group for hiking/mountaineers boots I say, spend more money on the boots and get some of the other stuff later. Sauer and Zeiss, perfect match. Sherpi

Thanks Sherpi, I'm looking to step up in quality and type of boot and spend more $ so I want to do my research and spend wisely. lc

I started the thread on Danner boots. I would like to add That since that time I sent them back to Danner and they replaced them even though they were 2 1/2 years old. That is good customer service. But, for heavy loads on steep rough ground (sheep hunting) they are just way too soft. I will still have to buy a light mountianeering boot or a heavy duty hiking boot for this application. There are some good recomondations from some people on this site with lots of experience. I will start to listen to it now for my next purchase of boot to hit the hills looking for those big Rams!!!

Hello- I just bought a pair of Lowa Extremes (Sheephunters) for a sheep hunt in the Brooks later this summer. They are the most comfortable boots I've ever worn. I had some LaSportiva's that while stiff for climbing, they were terrible for walking, being too stiff. If you think you might want to go with the Lowa's, follow the advice at Schnee's and get 1/2 size smaller than you would normally get. They seem to run large. Hope this helps. Good luck. sbsmith

Thanks, Lowa seems to be getting the nod. I'll have to find a dealer and test drive a pair. lc

It is a must to try the boots you are going to buy. Scarpa seems to fit narrow feet and so on. Each brand makes boots with soles rangeing from soft to stiff. I have stiff La sportiva but a friend of mine have a soft one. So check what fits you and choose that brand. Sauer and Zeiss, perfect match. Sherpi
