Excellent unit. I've one for two years now, and its features are exactly what you need for land navigation, plus some.

I hope the new generation, will incorporate SIRF III, but not really a necessity, also color would help.

In short, for the price, buy it!

I have one, and it does all that you need to navigate. It is great for tracking your trail and finding your car, and that you have it on your hand makes you use it instead of having it in the backpack. On the other hand it has no map like Garmin 60C. The 60 series are great tools but I got me a foretrex because I wanted one on the arm. I got me a Fortrex 101 instead of 201 because I want the chance to change batteries.

Sauer and Zeiss, perfect match.

I've decided to order one. I'll be searching for the best stateside price.

I have looked and looked and found the only negative comment is it's lack of map display. This doesn't bother me at all! We don't NEED no stinkin' map display! Wink

Absolutely right, we as hunters, DO NOT A MAP, just a good referene grid (provided by the 101), and before all, portability, low drainage and accuracy.

As stated before, the 101, does it all and more.

This is my 8th GPS, and have concluded from reald field use, that the 101 fits the bill perfectly well.

Of course, in the near future, Garmin or other company, could come up with some better models, but what I expect is not really crucial.

Probably, the will come with SIRF III and perhaps color, I mean in that size.

I don't need no stinkin' map display either---or a gps. That's Balman Reservoir. Is the road still as bad as it was 20 years ago?

Good eye there, plainview! That first photo (38 15 42.18N 105 41 22.79W) is Balman Reservoir. The second one (38 15 07.8N 105 42 33.9W) is further up the "road" at Rainbow Lake.

I don't know what it was like 20 years ago...... but I sure wouldn't recommend trying to go up there in the family sedan today! Wink

Plainview, my "stompin' grounds" are pretty extensive. But currently I'm concentrating on SE Colorado.

Do you have any recommendations on things I should see there?

Plainview,

One of these years I am going ot go on the trip with my dad and uncles to Bushnell Lake(s)...ever walked up to there? They like it because it is a trail that horses can't go up. My uncles and dad lived in Cotapaxi/coaldale for a while as youngsters.... I want to walk up to the top of Fleming Mtn as it was named after a great-great grandfather(my paternal grandfather's mother's dad).

Neat area....

akperrydog,

Nope, never walked up there but I do know where they are. I've spent most of my time farther south--Goodwin, Venable, Comanche, North-South-Middle Taylor, Sand Creek, Medano, Huerfano...There really aren't any bad places to go in the Sangres.

What part of Alaska are you in? I have two nephews up your way who used to hike with me down here.

Bushnell Lake

akperry, did you mean the Brush Creek Lakes (Upper and Lower near 38° 12.61'N, 105° 42.63'W)?

I don't know of any "Bushnell Lakes" near Cotopaxi/Coaldale.

That doesn't mean they aren't there. Because there are about a gazillion lakes in that area! thumb

PS - Fleming Mtn. 38° 21.26'N, 105° 47.17'W

The Bushnell lakes--as distinguished from the Brush Creek lakes farther south--are approached from the Hayden Creek campground near Coaldale. I'm told it's a very, very steep 5 1/2 mile climb after walking north 2 miles on the Rainbow trail. Haven't done it myself.

35 years ago fishing was very good in the upper & lower Venable Lakes as well as the beaver ponds at the beggining of the tundra. I quit fishing there when it became overused by mechanized trailbikes. Now however, it is a part of the Sangre de Cristo wilderness and access is by foot and horse only. It is still a very popular over-the-range loop route (Venable-Comanche) and while spectacular is heavily visited. I think some of the more remote lakes might be more productive.

I haven't walked it myself but my father and uncles say it is steep, rockey and narrow trail. They said the fishing was good but they kept getting run off the mtn by afternoon thunderstorms so they did a lot of walking and little fishing.

I live at sea level right now so my dad usually kicks my butt up those hills at 9000 to 1100 feet(he lives at 6500') I think you can only get up there from July to Sept due to snow and ice. Maybe next year.

I live in Bethel... a little ways off the beaten path thumb

plainview, I see 'em now (on the map).

Up FR 1402. First of the (three) Bushnell Lakes is at 38 21 05N 105 52 33W.

FR 1402 is listed as a "pack trail" and the contour lines are pretty close together. Looks pretty challenging!

I hope to check them out before the snow.... if not next spring. thumb

Great--post some photos of the trip when you get back. Better yet, buy an over-the-counter bull license for unit 86 and check out the Kerr Gulch area while you are there. One thing--the nearby Hayden Pass road is pretty nasty when it gets icy.

Are you located near the northern Sangre's?

Plainview, I'm within daytrip range of the Sangre's.

Funny you should mention Hayden Pass. I recently went down to the start at the Hayden Campground. The trail is rated "moderate" during summer months. But it was icy at the start. I decided not to attempt it.

A buddy of mine advised me that it gets very narrow and icy in fall and spring. He told me that a guy was killed there about 10 years ago when he slid off a steep narrow ledge in a jeep during icy conditions.

I have to bump this thread up again.

I've had my Garmin fortrex 101 since August 2006. The more I use it, ....... the more I like it!

I originally bought it as a back-up GPS..... but now I'm using it almost exclusively because it is so small and handy.

My question........ with GPS technology improving so fast, is there another (perhaps better) compact GPS out there?

I'm ALWAYS in need of a new toy! Wink

Since I have my Foretrex ( which I love ) I was in the quest for a better unit. So far, no success.

Unfortunately, the highly sensitive SIRF III chip is not available for this model.

I came back dog tired from an 8 hr. hike yesterday. I threw my cargo pants into the wash and heard a funny thumping when I started the drier.

I'd accidentally left my Fortrex in my pants pocket!

I dried it out and checked it out.... and it's still functioning perfectly after going through the wash! thumb

Just went shooting "Rjupa" last weekend and had the Fortrex on my hand the whole time. Then I downloaded the track into mapsource and great info is at hand. Track, profile and so on. I love that GPS, but I am also going to get Forerunner to run with, great programs that follows that GPS.

You know..... the only problem with the Foretrex 101 is its' small size.

I misplaced mine and can't find it! Eeker

It's in the house...... so I'll probably find it eventually.
