Lessening strap pressure on shoulders

larryshoresLessening strap pressure on shoulders
I have been training with my pack. I have 60 pounds of corn in the pack. The pack is one made by Barney's. Although heavily padded, the straps still really work my shoulders over.
Does anyone have any tips for strap comfort?

craigsterA waist belt, but I don't think they're available for your type of pack. I'd try adding a bit more padding, wider than the existing straps,
or lighten up on the corn a bit.
the weight should be on your hips not shoulders with my pack I transfer the weight back and forth between my shoulders and waist when it is heavy go on you tube and look for a clip on setting up you pack.

BigNateWhat they've said plus make sure your pack is fit to you. The more well fit it is the more equally balanced the load will be.
My hips usually bother me before the shoulder straps.

FrostbitLarry,
I would recommend PM'ing Brett Barringer. He worked at Barney's for awhile and helped set up my Barney's Yukon. I'm 5'9" and 156# and that pack is a dream to carry when well adjusted. He may be able to talk you through it.
Cheers

GaryVAThe Barney's freighter uses a custom yoke shoulder suspension and hip belt. They set-up the adjustment range to fit the customer's dimensions. You'd have the weight bearing upon your hips, not upon your shoulders. The shoulder suspension keeps the upper end of the pack against your body without bearing down.
Sounds like yours is improperly fit and/or adjusted. The hip belt needs to fit your size and be properly located on your hip bone. The shoulder suspension would then be set to properly fit your torso length. If this is not correct, the pack will not carry well.

sambarman338I guess you've got a breast strap on the pack.
They can take wear off your shoulders but tend to crimp breathing a bit.

When adjusted properly, it's a dream to carry.

p dog shooterWhen I was fitted for my mystery ranch back at the factory.
We couldn't get it feel right found out the sales person had place most of the weight towards the top.
After I reloaded it properly it was easy to get it right.
Back sure your weight is distributed properly.

MARK H. YOUNGLarry,
Your hips should carry the weight. That's why women do so well with backpacking. Your shoulders should mostly just keep the pack balanced.

Allan DeGroota well fitted waist belt
Shoulder straps with a sternum strap, so they don't slip off your shoulders.
The weight SHOULD be high in the pack otherwise you'll find it difficult to balance (easier to find yourself falling over backwards)
a high center of load makes it easier to shift the pack forward.
if the pack is loaded low you cannot do this

Ovis ChaserI run a Mystery Ranch pack and once I got it fit it was great. I have issues with straps and my collar bone rubbing on very long packs with heavy weight so I had a set of sheep skin Velcro wraps made that fit around the shoulder straps and it makes it much more comfortable. If it rains I just zip them off and wear my rain coat so have no issues...
Good luck tippin over a big ram Larry!!!

Larry, been there done that. It takes some hard work with rehab but you can get full function with the hard work after surgery.

AbbispaAdjust pack properly>
1. Put pack on, lean over and pull waist strap very tight so as to be high on hip bones.
2. Stand erect and snug shoulder straps. Straps should have been above your shoulders slightly before tightening. If not adjust pack.
3. Pull shoulder lifters tight.
4. Gently snug sternum strap.
The key to all of this is getting the first step right. Bend over and pull waist belt very tight. YOu want it high on your bones. Middle of strap high on hip bone.
Good luck.
