SnellstromCompare weights of rings and bases
I'd like to know the exact weight of Leupold dual dovetails and a set of rings and a talley lightweight 2 piece base/ ring combo set all for Win M70.
I've tried looking up the info but all I get is shipping weight. Trying to put together a lightweight rifle and would like to know what the weight savings would be with the Talley aluminum base and ring combo 2 piece.
Thanks

Idaho Sharpshootercall Leupold customer service and ask
A very nice young lady answers at Talleys, and knows what she is talking about.

ZekeShikarThere isn't enough difference to worry about.
Note: I say that as a set of LW Talley's are about to arrive for my sheep rifle. haha

secondtryThe difference will be around three ounces maybe a little more.
If you are chasing weight saving, you need to chase it everywhere. A big saving comes from a lot of small savings. not one big saving.
EG: 3oz on the mounts, 4 to 8 oz on the barrell profile (maybe a LOT more) a few oz on the stock, no more scope than is necessary - etc. etc. It all adds up.

Woodrow SJust look at what the lightweight rifle custom builders that specialize in that sort of thing are using. I have a 5.25lb MGA 375 H&H including a 26" braked barrel and scope mounts/rings..and I could have gotten it lighter still. Kerry makes his own lightweight mounts/rings. He might sell them separately.

Left hunterI just weighed them for a remington 700 ( which should be close) and I came up with 5.2 ounces for the leupolds and 2.3 ounces for the talley's.

sambarman338Whatever the weight of rings, make sure they have windage adjustments so you can have the reticle more-or-less centred in the scope, laterally at least. Even though image-movement makes the reticle look centred, strange things may happen when your zero is found at the edge of the adjustment range.

sheephunterabYou'll save 2.5-3 ounces going with the Talleys. The Talleys are good solid rings in a lightweight package.

lindy2If you like the leupolds use them, but there is a lot of extra metal on them. have a local gunsmith machine some of it off.

Snellstromlindy2 I went with the Talleys with a 3 oz weight savings. The rifle is complete and has been for many months and is shooting fantastic.
I've posted pictures of the completed project in other threads.

MARK H. YOUNGIf you are trying to trim every ounce go with Weavers but use the steel bases. I used them almost exclusively for years and never had a lick of problem with them.

sambarman338I have the factory aluminium mounts on my Tikka T3; very light but either they or the image-movement in the scope caused me to miss an 'unmissable' chamois.
Yes, backpack hunting can require extreme weight saving - but there are some places you should not skimp. Try cutting the handle off your toothbrush, as they do in the classics.

That's why I put Talley lightweights on my Tikka Superlite. Everything I read said to dump the Tikka rings.

sambarman338I'll have a think about that, thanks, Frostbit.
Do they have any lateral adjustments? The Tikka mounts don't but were free and boresighted perfectly, nullifying my usual old-timey disgust.
