If you prefer the no gunsmithing option the Chipmunk http://www.roguerifle.com/Rifles.htm can come from the factory chambered for the 22 WMRF.

Maybe I missed it, but the Browning .22 Auto TD is an extremely nice, high quality take down...accurate too! I had one growing up and it was almost always in my pack, killed many Blue Grouse with it. It's a light and handy gun that's not to small for a man, seems to be made for the mountains/trail. It's a little spendy (reasonable if you buy used), but well worth the outlay of cash if you do alot of backpacking in the mts.

Yep I still see M6s from time to time. But there was also the AR-5 or MA-1 from Armalite. Packed down similar to the AR-7 but was a bolt action in 22 Hornet. I'd like to see it reintroduced in 5.7x28.

A packable .22LR is a pistol. Take your choice from a six inch barreled semi-auto like a Ruger Mark III down to a two inch barreled Beretta Model 21 nee Tomcat.

I packed a 380 PPK S and a 4" 357 mag SS Ruger Secutity Six loaded with my hand rolled hp pocket rockets on our family backpacking trips .

I posted on the levergun forum that taurus is coming out with a model 32C carbine which is a takedown lever action in 32 H&R magnum with a 16" barrel. Unfortunately they do not seem to be out yet but if they work it might be a good option for what I want, especially with handloads.

Mark, I know you specified a "packable 22".... but I think as a "packable" all-around gun, the Savage 24-C can't be beat!

This guy has some good ideas on carrying the Savage 24-C!

I like a break-action single-shot Stevens pistol in .22 LR. I fixed a friend's takeapart rifle awhile back, a single shot with falling block action, can't remember what make. The barrel was held in the receiver with a knurled thumbscrew.

BTW - Savage has brought them out again. But they cost a bit more than $11.50! They now cost $261.00 sug. ret. and the stocks are now "walnut finished hardwood"!

A fella could shorten the hardwood for a 12-1/2 LOP and bob the barrel to 16-1/2 to make the takedown Favorite even handier (and a neat little starter rifle to boot).
