I own and have used a Paratipi and a 12 man. What really makes these tents work is the Kifaru wood burning stoves. You didn't say anything about the stove option, but I would strongly recomend that a stove be bought with your tent.

With kids, I would also recomend getting two warming trays. The trays act as a cool buffer to keep small body parts away from what can be a cherry red stove surface.

For a growing family I believe you would be better off with an 8 man tipi, and its still easily backpackable if you split the weight between two people.

In my opinnion these are better cool to cold weather tents than they are summer tents. In that vain I would get the mosquito neting option, which is an extra cost but good for bug protection and better ventilation in warm conditions. Nonbreathable tents tend to be hot and humid. In humid conditions, you may also want the liner, which catches condensation dripping off of the tent wall and adds a little more warmth to the tent as well as some extra weight.

Tipi camping, Kifaru style, is a unique and interesting experience you will enjoy. It does take a little getting udsed to because there is a learning curve with these floorless wood heated tents. But once you try it, I don't think you will ever want to go back to what you used before...Rusty.

Wonderful kit - that really works.

Second the opinion on the eight man being more suitable. I bought one and found that the stove was the item that makes the entire system work so well.

Thoroughly recommend it as kit you will NEVER regret purchasing.
