I've learned that maybe a great deal of power isn't needed for hogs. A friend used to use a Browning High Power to hunt them. At first I thought he was crazy but he just kept harvesting hogs.

As with any and every animal, placement is the key. Misplace your shot, and that is when the trouble (and tracking!) starts.

Yessir, shot placement is everything. That can't be said enough. I think the guy's secret was that he shot at close range. I did see a couple of hogs carcasses and the wounds so I know he wasn't completely fibbing. Whatever it was, it worked!

Larry Matherne;
Okay,you buy the FIRST beer. Then you help me design a hog knife. Then I'll build a pair of them. Trappers like my knives. Let's see what hog hunters think. Wood in the beer stage, cold rolled in the hangover stage, then order a Super High Strength Alloy.

I like the idea, I'll pm you later in the week with some ideas. I've got some knives that are nearly perfect, just not quite perfect.

I warn you though, that most dog hunters are not very particular, being a rough and ready crew and use just about anything that will do.

I on the other hand am a bit more discriminating, and appreciate a fine blade.

Larry;
The trapper knives started with a friend and his nephew at work. Bobby saw me polishing the edges of a carving knife and asked if I would sharpen his skinning knife. I did and he told me what he would LIKE in a knife. Full deep cut handle for grip, stiff backbone, a straight line on the edge from bolster to tip, and a quarter inch secondary angle at the tip to a strong needle point.
Stainless knife at the flea market. Plasma cut to shape. Belt sander and polish. A little tweaking and he is happy.
Couple of weeks later he is telling me his nephew really likes it and is going thru a lousy divorce.
Flea market again. Same story but a nice carbon steel blade. Took a lethal edge. I loved it. Told Bobby to give it to his nephew.........Bobby tries it and asks if he can keep it. Nope, it is for the kid. He smiled and said ok. Kid liked it. Made him smile in a crappy time in his life. I'm happy.
Bobby wants one for his dad for Christmas. Wanted to pay. Found a real large easy to grip handle and ground a stone to fit his hand for touching up the edge.
I like to make tools for the job.

Mentioned a Super High Strength Alloy. Won't hold an edge for ever but at 60 Rc it will bend some and tough as the hubs of Hell !!!! It doesn't need as much thickness for strength and still be tough. Ebony or leather grip? Maybe sharkskin? Temple spike?..........

Oh man we go from pigs and pistols to blades. Where do I sign up? PA needs a pig population I can start hunting. Hoping to make it to GA next winter and give it a try but I plan to use a long gun the first time around.

Sorry it has taken so long to respond but I've been busy. My favorite design is the "persian bowie". I have one made by Entrek and it is pretty close to ideal. What I don't like about it is it comes in 7" blades and 9" blades. I like a 8" blade myself. I wish the blade was just a hair thinner, thinner blades cut better. The blade has some sort of powder coating and I'd prefer a polished blade. I have the model with a double edge, which is better than a single edge as you don't have to change your grip to slit a hogs throat.

I know it sounds like I don't like the knife, but I actually do. My ideal knife would be the Entrek with all the above trimmings.

If we didn't learn from experience, we would still be with the first girl we went out with.
I have the sticking knife my grandfather had. Got to one he liked and stayed there. Still works. My grandfather was born in 1885.
We'll talk.
