Bullseye44,

Well, I live just to the north-east of you in Montana. Welcome to the cat room.

I have used the 270 gr Gold Dot on big game but not on the critters you listed. I used them on whitetails and they work very well.

I loaded them up to 1525 fps in my 9 1/2" SRH and was completely satisfied with the results. Accuracy has always been very good and penetration has never been a problem at all from any angle on a whitetail.

In fact, I would say that these bullets may be a bit over kill for deer but would expect they would be almost perfect for the game you are after. I would not think twice about taking any black bear with my 44 mag and the 270 gr GD. Nor would I hesitate to slam a big bull elk with the same gun/load. With elk I may not intentionally try to center the onside shoulder just in case there were a problem.

If you like taking the shoulders out on game the size of elk, I would go with at least a 300 gr hard cast bullet, for every other shot into the chest cavity of an elk, the 270gr G.D. would be great.

Hope this helps a little!

Good Hunting!!!

bullseye44 I have shot a few pigs in the head with the Speer 270 factory load out of a 4" 44Mag.
Some were for a coup de gras, some were for a test. All bullets went completely through, from the side or top of the head. The load is accurate in revolver or a 44 carbine.
