Looking for a hunting handgun for up here in Alaska? I could go with a single shot or I could go with like a 454 up to a 500? Would a high velocity bottleneck work better than a big bore revolver? Not really looking to hunt a griz, and looking more at hunting moose, caribou, black bear, deer etc, but griz are always out there. Which one would you choose? Thanks for any advise,
Dennis

I personally prefer revolvers to what some refer to as "hand rifles", as I guess I am more of a traditionalist. I'm a huge fan of the .475 Linebaugh. It'll tackle large and small game with aplomb.......

Dennis,
Either the T/C in .375 JDJ or the FA in .475 Linebaugh will do it all, as you know. I've used both there. I prefer the .475, but the .375 will give you twice the range.

Thanks guys! Ken, your like old buddy Dirk Stark, although his revolver is an old 44 RHK. Been I while since I've seen him, but I bet he still uses the same old guns. Its worked for him for quite a while.

Check out reedercustomguns.com and if he does not have something to strike your fancy...I would'nt know who would. In an Encore handgun I like the 378GNR with a 13" heavy barrel and a 4x Leupold or the 500 S&W Mini-Beast with the 8" heavy barrel and either a 2x or 4x Leupold. For a revolver, I like the Ruger Bisley Hunter in 410GNR and 265gr hardcast @1550fps, with a 2x Leupold. It shoots flat and fast...big enough diameter and hits hard. For up close and personal in an area with potential nasty stuff, a Reeder Alaskan Hunter in 500 Linebaugh and 435gr hardcast. No scope needed. Gary has lots of options...but a standard heavy loaded 45 Colt or 44 mag is all that is really necessary to get the job done.

Dennis: Another vote for a 475...(besides, I don't think you have any good 454 brass left)...another vote for a revolver over a single shot. dvnv

I have a taurus raging bull 454 that I thing is a great hunting handgun.

I also think any 40+ cal black hawk would be good along with full frame 44 mags.

Then there is the 480 ruger SRH and I like the looks of the 475 linebaugh BFR.

Dennis, I haven't seen Dirk for a couple of years, either, but you're right...he's taken a lot of game, including Alaska game, with his .375 JDJ.

Yes Ken, along with his favorite 44 RHK. He tried going to a 454, but quickly sold it, and stuck with his .44 mag. I think he got one of his capes with it, along with a bunch of other game.

Yes, he wounded the Buff with his .375 JDJ and a 270 gr. Hornady bullet. Found it the next day, as I recall, and was able to finish it with the .44 Redhawk.
