I use to go to a gun range that had 6 Tarus 454 pistols blow the barrels off .That would be no fun at all.

Drop the bullets from a hot mold into a 5 gallon bucket of cold water, and you'll get a nice hard bullet, but don't let the bullets cool before dropping. If somehow a drop of water gets in the mold cavity, and trust me you'll hear it sizzling, then don't pour lead into the cavity. I still have the bullet I did it with, and while it looks interesting, the lead blowing out of the sprue hole is a bad deal.

The bigger danger is dropping your wet defects into a pot of molten lead. Make sure the defects are dry, or put into a cold pot before melting.

If the bullets don't sizzle when they hit the water, either you aren't casting hot enough, or you are letting them cool too long, and you won't get full hardness. Straight ww's thus cast come out 18-20 BHN, vs 11-12 for air cooled.

I called the range today to check and see if any of the range masters

knew of the 6 Taurus Raging Bull's in 454 Casull blowing barrels,

and no one there heard of such a thing. I think a bit of an urban legend

is trying to get a foot-hold here, so I don't think US Taurus owners have

anything to worry about. My research on these Taurus Bulls have

produced by far a majority of fine reports, compared to the problems.

There is a gun shop called Bullseye in Ga .They had 6 Tarus Raging bull 454 pistols blow off the barrels. They were new guns.I think they were all from the same shipment. They never got any more after that.I have heard of other Tarus raging bulls loosing barrels also. There is a Ruger 454 on Gunsamerica for $425.Thats the lowest I have seen.I am glad I got the 2 454 Ruger pistols .I pratice alot with them.I think I should try some medium 454 loads.I had one round almost rip the web of my hand .It was my reload I dont know what happened.I resize my cases as far down as possible .They are very loose in my gun.I think that one somehow was tight. It took my hand about 2 weeks to get back to normal.I saw Where Brain Pierce hurt his hand on S&W 500.I think 454 is my limit.I can shoot about 60-70 full 300 gr 454 loads or about 150 250 gr loads .

I don't mean to be argumentative here, but I called this place you (pm'd me) spoke of in Lawrenceville, Georgia today:

Bullseye Indoor Range and Gun Store

Point of contact: Randy Powell

221 West Crogran Street

Lawrenceville, Georgia 30045

Phone: 770-963-6556

...and spoke with a few people, and no one there ever heard- or had knowledge of the Taurus problem you speak of at their store, or gun range. If I have the wrong place, please give me the right place, so I can check this out.

You are making a very serious statement regarding the safety of a Taurus Raging Bull. Owners, such as myself should be aware of this problem if it actually does exsist.

I've read all I could find for weeks on the internet about the Bull, and not once have a read what you say has happened. In fact I've read about far more problems with the SRH 454, concerning accuracy, cylinder flex that has made cases stick, and bad triggers etc. This could be because there are more Rugers sold maybe, but if Taurus Raging Bull guns are blowing up as you say, I want to know when and where.

Paul,

What happens if you have to size and lube the water dropped bullets, does this change (or lessen) the hardness?

thanks,

Thanks for all the advise. I did pick it up in the 9.5" barrel. Shot a few factory rounds through it, not too bad recoil wise. The crane release and trigger are pretty rough, typical Ruger in my opinion. From what I have seen of them on display it looks like the finish is not too durable either, not typical Ruger. Ordering it was a hassle, the salemen kept losing the papaerwork, you know your in trouble when they ask "who did you talk to before". Now on to the loading bench to see if I can find something it likes. They sure charge enough for brass! BTW the main reason I did not think about the Taurus was the porting. For a hunting gun I really don't like breaks or porting, just too loud. I've heard the rumors about Taurus guns blowing up too. It's kind of hard to believe a court ordered recall would not be in effect if it was true.

Hi MMS,

It's the "I've heard the rumors about Taurus guns blowing up too"...

factor on the net that needs to be addressed more often. With all the BS people start, it just bugs me, and I would like to see some of this crap addressed if it is indeed BS.

Not to be saying you are in anyway spreading BS, but you know what I mean.

Thanks,

ML

With all the mainstream press coverage that the Rem. 700 with its "defective" safety gets and the high sales numbers of the Raging Bull. I find it hard to believe this would not be in the press somewhere that I could find with a google search. Add to that the fact that many gun writers are the die hard pro american types that would love to slam a foreign manufacturer, I really doubt it ever happened. Anything I read on an internet forum I consider BS unless it seems to make sense or I can find it elsewhere in the "mainstream". No offense to anyone here, but you can masquerade as anybody on the internet. The old guy telling you the secrets to elk hunting could be a 13 year old in New Jersey with a subscribtion to Fur-Fish-Game and a good imagination

Point very well taken, MMS...

I have done and read every conceivable search on the net for 2 months

prior to buying my handgun on the Taurus Raging Bull in 454 Casull

w/8-3/8" barrel, and never, NEVER, found the barrel blow up problem...

My conclusion is this story is pure l00% urban legend BULL Sheite.....!!

All those rumers about the raging bull is just that--BS. This is a very strong gun.
Sizing a water dropped boolit will work soften the surface slightly, not enough to worry about.

I am the proud owner of a SRH in 454 and it quickly became one of my favorite guns! Although I personally prefer the feel of a single action, the redhawk fits me well and i am very comfortable with it. Shortly after I bought the gun, i decided to top it off with a Burris 2x7 matte scope which made it a little heavy, but well worth the additional weight. I am shooting Freedom Arms 260 Grain JFP bullets propelled by 36 gr of H110. Recoil is pretty rude but managable. These bullets are kindof pricey but do an outstanding job.

Ok, I dont know about any raging bull barrel blowing up but I do know FOR A FACT that one of my friends purchased a Taurus 17 HMR (not sure about the exact model but can find out) and the cylinder didnt advance completely into the proper location causing the bullet to mis-align with the barrel, thus "blowing-up" in his hand. The gun really didnt explode, but was visably damaged and he only received minor injuries, namely burrs in his skin. Taurus promptly sent him a new 17 and after SEVERAL ugly talk phone conversations taurus sent him a new raging bull 454 to compensate.
