I just wanted some opinions on what gun people felt was "better"? I know the BFR is single action and the Smith is double action. Both have 10" barrels, but The Perf. Center Smith has a Compensator, which could be nice w/440grs. @ 1600fps! I plan on buying one of these soon and just want some more input.

I bought the SW 500 PC 10.5" when they first came out, very nice trigger shot great .I took a bison with a 575gr WFNGC cast bullet at 1350 fps, then sold it to buy the SW 500 PC 6.5".The 10.5" is to big,the 6.5" balances a lot better.

I don't have either in 10 inch. But I do have a 4 inch S&W and a 6 Inch BFR in 500 MAG.

I first got the BFR in 500 MAG because Magnum Research beat S&W in having the guns to the market. I bought the 7 1/2 inch BFR but had Mag-na-port cut the barrel down to 6 inches and add porting. The BFR is very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I also bought a S&W 8 3/8 inch and did a side by side comparison and chose the BFR over the S&W.

I sold my 8 3/8 S&W and currently still have my BFR in 500 MAG. I have since bought a 4 inch 500 MAG from S&W and I love the gun. It is my Alaska gun.

The main reason I picked the BFR over the S&W was the way recoil was felt and I just like the single action design. But either gun will serve you well.

Redhawk1, did the Mag-na-porting help with the recoil? I shoot a Desert Eagle .50AE and don't find the recoil bad at all(but it is a gas operated auto). But some of the wheel guns I've shot in .44 and .454 feel like you've hit your hand with a hammer; the blood rushes back in with a thump, thump feeling, OUCH!

Kahluaman, it help more with the muzzle flip. But not much with the felt recoil.

I shoot the S&W 500 with 83/8" barrel. I have a leupole scope on it also so the weight is around 6 lbs and recoil isn't bad. I just shot a 1" group with the 500gr bullets going 1419 fps
at 85 yds.

Redhawk1, You've already shot it 50 times! Well, what bullets/loads were you shooting and how was accuracy?

I love to shoot my 500 MAG. I will be taking it out again this weekend and shooting another 50 rounds. When you reload you get to shoot more. Big Grin

I was shooting the 370 gr. cast bullets with gas checks. I load 41.0 gr. of Lil Gun and CCI Large Pistol Magnum primers.

I shot out too 50 yards and had 2 inch groups. I was shooting of a bench without sandbags. I just rested the grip on the table.

I am going to load up some 575 gr. cast bullets and try them out also. I want the gun ready for my up coming bear hunt.

In regards to Bison kill with the 500 S&W, how many rounds? What kind of penetration? Any notable results other then a dead animal?

These are my 2 BFR's. Both have 10" Barrels. One is in .45-70, and the other is in .500 S&W Magnum. Both are accurate with excellent triggers. I would not hesitate to buy another BFR. They are very well made revolvers. billt

I have the X-frame 500 and the BFR.....both are outstanding revolvers, but in terms of accuracy, my BFR gets the nod. Scoped, it'll easily cut 1" groups at 50 yards. With a similar 4x Leupold, the Smith does around 2.5" at that distance.

Which do you like better the 45/70 or the 500 BFR. Which is the most accurate?

The .45-70 with heavy cast handloads is a bit more accurate than the .500. But the .500 shoots well also. These large heavy framed guns tame recoil quite well. I think one of the reasons the .45-70 is a little more accurate is the longer case, which translates to the bullet not having as much freebore before it engages the rifleing. This is just my opinion however. billt

Hi,
1 shot where head and spine meet, the shot angled forward thru skull out opposite side under the horn ,bison dropped like it was struck by lightening.I cast my own bullets the 575gr was BHN 24-28 (pretty hard). The max velocity with the 10.5" PC is about 1450 FPS.

475/480 What receipe are you using for your cast bullets? I am still looking for something that works better than wheel-weights they tend to lead my Ruger Red Hawk 44mag a lot. I am also thinking on a .480

If you use gas checks bullets, you should have no leading problems with ww bullets. You can also drop them from the mold into a 5 gal pail of water to harden them. I've shot thousands of ww bullets, and they typically don't lead, unless the gun has some dimensional problems that lead to leading.

Paul is right as usuall. thumb
In my SRH 480 I use straight WW-BHN 14,I know some others who have WW that are BHN-11,mine come out a little harder.Might be because I cast fairly hot.
Also if I want BHN 24-28,I drop them just as Paul described, into a bucket of water straight from a hot mould. And 95% of my moulds are gas check design.
