Gentlemen

I have been thinking about getting a Desert Eagle in cal. 357 mag!
I know that there are two kinds of DE old and new model!
What is the difference ?
The handgun law in Denmark will not make it possible for me to get it in .44 mag .50AE etc. so the 357 is the only option.
It would just be for kicks not hunting.

Cheers,

Andr

The other differences are mostly options - I think the Mark XIX may now come standard with adjustible Millet sights instead of the fixed combat sights standard on the earlier models, the Mark I & Mark VII (3 models).

I get this info from a Magnum Research catalog that is a few years old. They send me one from time to time when I order something for my Mark VII. The web sight may be a little more up to date.

The DEP can be a little tricky to master, mostly because it has the worst factory trigger ever put on any weapon of any kind ever produced anywhere by anyone at any time, or close to it, like somewhere between an FMJ Derriger and a rusty gate latch. Creepy does not begin to describe it, more like crunchy.

But $50.00 and a trip to my gunsmith straightened that out and now mine shoots as well as any handgun I own, trigger pull similar to a good single action pull on a quality revolver. The newer Mark XIX may have addressed that, but I think the trigger assembly is the same for both VII and XIX, the Mark I was different.

DEP is a great handgun, but be prepared to have that trigger job done. Otherwise, they are hard to beat.

Good luck,

Jason

P.S. I also use the Millet white rear / orange front combo. This is a great sight set-up, as the black fixed sights that were standard on the Mark VII were pretty lousy.

JT,

All of my DE's came with pretty good triggers from the factory, one of them being what I would consider exceptional, and I am very picky when it comes to triggers! I have seen bad triggers from MRI on other's pistols, so I know what you report happens, but I just wanted to throw in the observation that such is not universally the case with DE pistols.

I was at the gunstore in Copenhagen today and played around with a Mark XIX. Sweet I like it
But the price was more then $ 2000 and I mean more. Dollar rate is bad right now so it is hard to give an exacte price.
I am hoping to trade in a rifle or something to get one.

Cheers,

Andr

Sean,
That's actually good to know. My VII came with a particularly rough trigger. Some others I have handled have been a bit better. My smith has done a few other triggers on them other than mine, did say mine was one of the worst. I'm glad mine was not a good representative of them, because otherwise, they are great weapons. I added the white / orange Millets and the grooved rubber grips and it shoots great now.

Kev,

They still make the 50ae. The weight on the steel framed pistol [they only made the alloy frame for a little while, and I have one of those in 357mag] is 62.4 oz for the 357mag and 72.4 oz for the 50AE. Both of these are for the 6" barrel.

The 50ae is surprisingly easy to shoot. I know some have reported that the recoil is stiff, but I come from the perspective of having hunted with and fired Single shot Contenders and Encores in some ferocious calibers for barrel length and weight.

To me, the slap of stiff recoil one gets from even a 10" 44mag open sighted T/C Contender is much more ferocious than the hard "push" one gets from the 50ae in a DE.

As to the price, I have seen used excellent condition 50AE's go for as little as $750.00 and as much as full retail. Just surf the auction sites and classifieds and you can find a good deal.

I love my DE MKVII in 44mag. The 50 was a bit much to shoot, not to mention the cost of the ammo it more than I want to pay.
