Hi Guys & Redhawk1:

I had the S&W 500 4in. out on the weekend and shot a box of Ultramax 440 grain hard cast bullets. Accuracy was pretty good at 25 yards from the bench with a rest. Around 2.5 inches inches

I am reloading with Cast Performance bullets and H110 @ 44 grains...... should I be using the the comp for the jacketed bullets or lead bullets with Cast Performance...??? or does it really matter?

I also have about 50 rounds of empty brass from Cor-Bon with the small pistol primer. Can I reload these rounds with a large rifle primer? I don't want to mix and match them..?

I think Redhawk1 answered this some where on here before. I know he has at least (2) 500's and at least (3) 460's... my hero.. clap

I had my nephew fire off about 10 shots from the big 50, he is hooked, he actually shot real well with it, I was very surprised. he is now looking for one.

Regards... Jim P.

As far as I know, you should be shooting the comp without the holes in the top. I think the theory is that gas cutting deposits lead in these ports, but if these are gas checked, who knows?!? Also, you'll need a primer pocket reamer to enlarge the corbon pockets to accept the large pistol primers. And what bullet weight are you shooting with 44gr of H110??? Hopefully not a 440gr... Eeker

Hi MC:

Nope...shooting the Cast Performance 44 grains of H110 ...370 grain WFN Gas Check @ 1525 FPS from my 4 in. I didn't make it up, I got it from Hodgon Pistol Data on the web.

Also shooting the Barnes 275 grain JHP's with 42 grains of H110 for approx 1565 FPS as a lite defensive load against enraged groundhogs.

Did you chrono those loads? Or was that what was listed on Hodgdon's site?

Shooting MagTech 400gn JSP ammo out of my 4" goes 1200fps but is rated at 1600fps.

I've been loading the Lee 440s with 2400 at around 900fps.

I think that I would keep the brass with the small primer pockets seperate from the others. I wouldn't see any problems with useing a small rifle primer in it. Just be sure to drop your loads down when switching to the rifle primer, then work back up to the velocity you want.

I have been shooting the comp that came in the gun and haven't noticed anything wrong. I haven't tried the comp for lead bullets though.
I was thinking that maybe it was supposed to help keep the front sight cleaner? maybe the lead bullets blowing lube out the top ports and mucking up the front sight??
My front sight is clean, so I don't know what their reason is.
I'd like to get one without any ports in it. Is anyone making them?

Hay there PAHunter,

I use the longer comp without the holes on the top, it is for lead bullets. As a matter of fact I use it even for the jacketed bullets. Just make sure you don't use the jacketed comp when shooting the lead bullets, you can get lead build up in the top ports and make it near impossible to remove the comp.

Lar45, the 500 Mags cases never came with small rifle primer pockets, the started out with Large pistol primers and now are large rifle primer pockets.

If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

4" 500S&W Chrono Data from my gun...

275gr XPB - 44gr Lil Gun - 1725fps
350gr JHP - 41gr Lil Gun - 1600fps
385gr JHP - 40gr Lil Gun - 1550fps
385gr JHP - 43gr H110 - 1500fps

These are averages from 5 shot strings...

Hi Guys & Lar:

Those velocities were from my Chrony @ 12 ft. with 5 shot groups. And they were very consistant in extreme spread with less than 5 FPS between five shots.

I am getting some black blow back marks from the comp with the holes in the top on the front site, but I bet I get less muzzle rise with that comp than with the one with no holes for led bullets. What ya think?
