im looking at a nice 5" 460 dose any one have any exp with it im looking to use it as my lighter carry gun for brush defence bear repelleant mainly and its smaller and lighter than my 500 s&w. unfortunaly s&w dosnt offer custom barrel legths thats sucks.... i would love to have a 4.250 500 anything below 4.176 or 106mm is prohibited and reqiers a speical permit. i can wait till i find my self a nice house in the states preferably in texas. this gun would only be used in the usa while hunting wich i do alot of.

Have you thought of having a custom compensator made for the 4" 500S&W that would lengthen the barrel to legal status? Doesn't seem too tough... Can you burn enough powder with the huge case in 5" to make it worthwhile? Seems you will have to use a small charge of fast powder which might be equaled in a .454 or .45 Colt with slow powders. I don't know! I am asking! Would any of you buy a .300 Weatherby with an 18" barrel? I have enough trouble with large cases in 10" barrels! The use of the proper slow powder in a short barrel will reduce velocity, give you a HUGE fireball and a muzzle blast I would not want to be near. Why don't one of you that wants to shorten their barrel cut it little by little and chronograph it until you get to the length you want, then post results? My opinion is that the larger the case, the longer the barrel I want to make use of the powder capacity. Some of those short guide guns would be better served with shorter brass.

the short barrel gun will not be a regualr hunting hadgun it will be more of a self defence bear repellent gun. and a 50 blows a huge hole.

can you cut the barrel, whatI have read the barrel is a tube with a shroud and it is part of a special design so the frame can handle all that stress NRA Life Member, ILL Rifle Assoc Life Member, Navy

Yes, I understand about the big bore but the huge powder capacity in a short barrel is a waste. Why wouldn't a .50 special be as effective? You have a case that will hold a lot of slow powder and then stick 12 grains of Unique or some other fast powder in it. Of what use is all the extra space except to reduce the chamber pressure a little? If you use a VERY heavy boolit and a medium rate powder, it would be better but the .460 has everyone believing in fast, long range, light boolits. Take a real heavy boolit in the .460, then you can slow down the burn rate and get better results. This means factory loads are out! Of course the recoil and blast will be something a lot of guys can't handle from those short guns.

The 50 special sounds good or maybe a 50 A.E.
