I am ordering some 360gr. LBT heat treated solids from Cabela's(the only place I could find them!) and was wondering if any of you may have any loading info for them? I am currently using Winchester 296. I noticed this info on the Buffalo Bore site:
quote:.454 Casull Printed Order Form Per Box of 50
Item 7A: 325 gr. L.B.T.- L.F.N. (1525 fps /M.E. 1678 ft. lbs.) (Big game up to 2000 lbs.) $64.99 Order Now!
Item 7B: 300 gr. J.F.N.. (1650 fps / M.E. 1813 ft. lbs.) (Big game up to 1500 lbs.) $67.99 Order Now!
Item 7C: 360 gr. L.W.N.G.C. (1425 fps / M.E. 1623 ft. lbs.) (Big game up to 2000 lbs.) $64.99 Order Now!
The .454 Casull is one cartridge that BBA does not load to it's full pressure limit. When loaded to it's full pressure potential the .454 Casull can become unreliable and unpleasant to shoot. At upper pressure levels, heavy bullets tend to jump crimp - tying up the cylinder. (wouldn't this be great in an emergency) Also, fired brass can stick in the chambers. BBA feels that a 360 gr. bullet (or 325 gr. bullet at 1525 fps) at 1425 fps is still very powerful, comfortable to shoot, and TOTALLY RELIABLE. At these levels, these bullets give up nothing in killing performance.
This gives me the velocity max not to excede, however I am at a loss finding a good working starting load(and velocities) or max loads(and velocities). Can anyone help me out here? THANKS!!!
You did not mention what kind of gun do you have. With a Freedom Arms 454 Casull revolver, I would start at 25 grains of W296 or H110 and work your way up to around 27.5 grains. Of course, this is for the 360 grain LFN GC LBT bullet. I don't believe this is a maximum load as there is no need to go there. You can order this bullet directly from Cast Performance. Good luck. Cheers! Ming

Josh and Ming, unfortunately the "Casull" in question is a 5" Raging Bull. Believe it or not, I DID try to get a Freedom Arms FIRST, but they're WAY behind on production. I am attempting to get in the 1250-1300 fps range and was trying to find out where to start, maybe 25 grs. will be close. I'm not trying to push the envelope in the Bull as I had heard of potential problems. I just wanted a good "bone breaker" and that 360 gr. LBT at even 1200 fps would be awesome for that! Thanks for your imputs!
while we are on the subject of reloading for the Casull, i have a problem that i have yet to hear a solution for.
i use Hornady dies. since this is going to get a good tight crimp, i always trim my cases after they have been sized. i use a Forster trimmer. the problem i have is that after i size the cases the case mouth is too small for the trimmer pilot to enter it.
i have heard several suggestions to resolve this, but they all were pretty weak. do any of you have a similar situation?? how do you deal with it?? this is the only cartridge i have this problem with.............help......

I use 30.0 grains of 296 with a 340 grain cast bullet out of my Taurus. I load it as long as the cylinder will allow, and crimp it very tight. It produces 1500 fps. I use 27.5 grains of 296 with a cast performance 370 grain out of my Ruger with the same 1500 fps and heavy crimp. Both of these loads are as max as it gets, both produce nearly 1800 ftlbs of enery.
I load the 325 Lyman with about 19gr 2400 and a magnum primer. It gives me between 1150 and 1200fps from the 8" Bull. It shoots really well, and it feels really light. I don't think 1500fps with W296 or H110 would be excessive for the Taurus with this bullet. With a 360, I might feel better at 1200 or so. My philosophy is shooting extremely heavy 45 colt type loads using stronger machinery. Hey, its a Taurus, not an FA. Its not quite a true 454, just a 45 Colt magnum. Works for me.
