S&W 629 3" Carry Comp?

Does anyone have experiance with this? I farm and every now and then I'm a foot through mechanical woes. Just yesterday I blew a hydralic line on the tractor and had to walk about a mile over very rough ground. Normally I don't fear feral hogs but I could easily have suprized a sow with pigs or a boar some body clouted with a varmit bullet. I have a 4" .44 Redhawk and a 4 5/8 Ruger Vaquero that I have confidence in, but in the back pocket of my overalls they still have too high a center of gravity to feel secure. I thought this would wear better, but I know nothing about the piece. If the "Comp" means ported, then I have no more interest as my ears have suffered enough over the years as it is.

I'm pretty sure that those are ported.

Sorry.

I hate to break this to you but a 3" ported vs. a 4" non-ported? They're both going to deafen.

I carry a 4" 357PD (.41mag) in the field for beastie carry. I don't want to fire it. Really. I really don't. I will lose some degree of hearing.

On the other hand I'd rather be deaf than dead.

Carry earplugs. If time permits, use them. If time doesn't and your life is on the line the porting will be irrelevant.

PS: try a cross-draw configuration. I found it much more comfortable in the field.

Regards,

Robert

You may want to look around for a an older S&W 696 or a 3" Lew Horton 624. The .44 Special will pack enough horsepower to kill a hog with the proper bullet. I have not found mine to be objectionable on the ears.

I bought a 3 inch 29 in nickel out of the heritage series several years ago. It is sqare butt, red ramp front, white outline rear sight with target trigger and target hammer. All I had to do was exchange an old set of target grips for the magnas that came on it and I had a nice shorty for CCW and field carry. It is NOT ported.

My 4 inch Ti 41 mag is very loud I will not shoot with out hearing protection. Unless my life depended on it. Then I'll take the hearing loss instead of becoming food.

Nice to carry but very lound to shoot.

I'd say a 329NG loaded w. 44 specials -- that's what I carry.

I started wearing a chest holster under my overalls -- as long as you aren't on your belly too much it's pretty comfortable.

If you are, maybe a shoulder holster would work?

Thanks for all the replies. I really like your revolver, Whitworth. Especially since it is a "Real Smith" with the firing pin on the hammer. I've posted elsewhere about a modern S&W Mountain Gun I had that punctured a primer once and the floating firing pin stuck and tied up the gun. I know I could have cocked an old Smith out of that situation. I'm really use to wearing overalls daily and of course they have no belt. When I am driving a tractor a hip holster would be uncomfortable due to the arm rest on each side. The tractor cab is not totally dust proof so I would like to carry it in a zippered rug. Overalls have much bigger hip pockets than jeans and I have toyed with several ideas for securing a holster in the pocket. They make a tool for pressing in the big snap buttons into denim. I've thought about mounting them inside the pocket to button into a holster some how. Also thought about velcro.

Also thought of a simple bandoleer set up to slip into quickly when I have to walk it out.

If you could pick up a 44 snub (3") Robert Mika makes a very nice pocket holster, only around $30.00. It would fit your strong hand front pocket of your bibs and be a marvelous set-up. This holster stays firmly in your pocket when you draw your pistol, holds your handgun upright in the proper position, and all you do is drop it in your pocket. I've used mine now for about 2 years and think very highly of it.

PS. He'd probably make one for your 4". The butt might stick out of your pocket a little, but that shouldn't be a problem on the farm. This holster is small enough that you could carry handgun and holster in a zipper pistol rug and just drop it in your pocket when you get off the tractor.

PS. PS. These holsters are all hand made and delivery time might be 6-10 weeks, but well worth the wait.

For that situation, my first choice would be an old 629 "Mountain Gun", it was designed especially for carrying in a pocket, probably not many that have one are looking to part with though

I have a couple, one is a backup just in case.

After 500+ rounds out of the two of them in the last 6 weeks and lots of carry in a cross draw Bianchi, I love it.

Full power H110 loads with a 250 cast will let you know it went off.

I load the same bullet with 9.0 of Unique at 960 fps and it's a lot of fun to shoot.

Well, I found one! Coming back from visiting my mom, I stopped at Cabelas north of Ft. Worth and found a 3" blued old style S&W .44mag. I had to have it and brought it home. No pics (my dumb ass doesn't know how). It looks like Whitworth's (not as sweet) but still in good condition. The grips are after market Herrits I think. They are a little too long for me. Hopefully, I will find someone who can work wood to work on them for me.

LOL, don't tell Michael, he may snatch it up! Lord knows he needs 13 four-inch Anacondas! Big Grin

So you found yourself a Lew Horton Model 29! Congratulations! I think you will be happy with it! They're pretty rare, you know......

Yep. Shot a couple short 44's and even WITH earplugs they are loud.
Had a 357 Taurus 8-shot with porting and it was loud, too.

A little more deaf or FUBAR? Your choice.
