Just curious what you guys prefer to carry your Super Redhawk in. I have a 7.5" (non scoped) that i'm looking for a good holster. I am leaning more towards a good cross draw but am open to suggestions.

It's a big revolver to be carrying on your belt and I would suggest a shoulder rig for it. I have two cheap Uncle Mike's units (one for scoped revolver and one without) that work like a charm. You are right about it being a big pistol. Although i'm not a big fan of shoulder holsters I may buy one to see how I like it. They are cheap enough that I wouldn't mind it so much if I didn't like it.

i have a scoped 9.5 SRH I bought a custom made cross draw holster from C.Rusty Sherrick and I have not had any problems either sitting in a tree stand or ground blind and does not get in way when wearing a day pack Ya can't kill'em too dead. -Elmer Keith

I just "won" a scoped SRH on Gunbroker a couple of days ago. Uncle Mikes makes a bandolier holster that fits across your chest that I just ordered for the SRH that I'll be receiving soon. BH1 There are no flies on 6.5s!

It has taken me years to finally find what I consider perfection for carrying a big bore revolver. A custom maker from Chugiak AK named Johnston builds a chest carry rig that I use for my FA M83 .454 and my Superblackhawk's. My 5&1/2" redhawk I carry in one of those nylon chest rigs and my 7&1/2" redhawk I carry in a X15. I carried all my revolvers in X15's for years but they can be uncomfortable and I was glad to discover the chest carry option. DRSS NRA life AK Master Guide 124

I had been ambivalent about keeping my SRH 480 Ruger because it is not nearly as convenient to carry or use as my custom 480 SRH 4.75-inch barrel. About a month ago I bought THE holster for it, a discontinued DeSantis shoulder holster whose design concept I first saw in an old Heiser brand. What make the holster convenient, for me, is that it is a pouch holster that pivots within its housing. Drawing from any position, inside or outside a parka, is convenient. Holstering is equally convenient. And this benefit is seldom considered by holster users of spring-fastener devices, such as Bianchi's X-15 and 2100. I bought the holster to wear outside my parka during winter wandering. Holster is intended for a Redhawk 7.5-inch barrel. The SRH is a perfect fit -- no wet molding needed to accommodate the slightly larger SRH frame. Upon using the holster, I wrote to DeSantis, asking for them to put the design back in production. No reply. Wrote again. No reply. I suspect several custom makers could replicate its design. I intend taking both of my holsters of this design to Ennis, Montana, to ask whether Wes Daems, my holster guy, would consider making the pattern. In a twisted way, I'm very unhappy with the holster. I had intended to convert the 7.5-inch barrelled SRH 480 into cash. Now I cannot do it; it's become more than a "parts" gun. Hope this helps. Here is a thumbnail. It's so simple to be wise. Thanks for all the replies. I carried various weapons in shoulder rigs and found them to be a little uncomfortable at times. Ofcourse this was day in day out 14+ hours a day. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad while out hiking or hunting with a handgun. I have always thought a cross draw holster would be the answer but with the longer barrel it may not work for me. I'm 5'11" and medium framed. I'll give one of the uncle mikes a test and see if I like it or not. I hope they do make them in Left handed. That's the other problem I run into, trying to find a style I like that is offered in a left hand model.

I have the shoulder rig from Levergun Leather Works for my 480 Super Redhawk. He’s a great guy to do business with and he does real quality work… Sorry no pic… but there is one halfway down this link… he calls it a Bandoleer holster http://www.levergunleather.com/p_holster_rigs.htm

I should have mentioned this earlier. I am 5'8" and 140 pounds. The revolver barrel length I can use comfortably with a belt holster from any position is Wes Daems' cross-draw with 15-degree cant. Longer than this and I cannot plop down. I must lean away from the holster when sitting. This gets old fast. Because I bought the DeSantis holsters to wear over my parka, there is no discomfort attributable to it. Parka provides padding without which it is possible the SRH would be uncomfortable to wear all day. I find pouch holsters that are worn across the chest do not allow the wearer to do a wide variety of activities -- for example, carrying anything bulky using both arms like a load of wood, opening and closing parka for temperature control. Essentially, I find they get in the way of doing many routine outdoor tasks. And field dressing your downed animal becomes interesting. Since we have grizzlies, mountain lions, and wolves where I live, the chances of me removing my holstered revolver when dressing the animal are between slim and none. . . . And slim's out of town. It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Sam Levinson

I too use a Uncle Mikes crossdraw/bandolier one for scope and one for no scope. Now if I can remember what I did with the one for when I do use a scope. ''People should say what they mean and mean what they say. Life is too short to be lead down the wrong path.''

I have two Gunmate Bandolier Holsters for my 7.5 inch Bisley Hunter and 10.5 inch 460 Smith, both scoped. Can also be used as a belt holster, although havent tried it as a belt holster. The top flap is removable, and both of mine have been removed, attached with velcro, way to much noise. Even removed still has a top strap with a snap for security. $29.99 from Cabelas, black or camo. The best "cheap" rig I've found.

For my SRH, XVR and my other large revolvers, I use a S&W bandoleer made by DeSantis. While mine is in affordable nylon, its also available in leather. http://www.smith-wesson.com/we...y_rn=32817&training= Its not a pouch per se and not a shoulder holster. Straps to twist etc is minimal. I think I paid 59 at the time and figured if I really liked it, I'd go back and invest in leather. As it turns out, while ideal, I can only wear one at a time and as long as it continues to be functional, I'd just keep on akeepin' on. ==================================================================================================== Note: This post may contain misspellings, grammatical errors, disorganized sentence structure, or may entirely lack a coherent theme. Well I ordered a standard hip holster from Ruger for the time being. I have looked around for a rig like you guys have but have only found them for the scoped pistols. I guess I will order one when they come in stock again. I needed something for this weekend. I could've used one of my other pistols but I really want to try out the 400gr cast bullets and my new pistol.

Palladin8, I tried to respond last night but I was having probelems loading up pics to Photobucket. Since you seemed to really focus on a belt holster I thought I would reply in kind. Last year I was getting ready to head up to Alaska on a Grizzly hunt on the Seward Peninsula, north of Nome. I decided to carry my 4-5/8" NMBH in 45 Colt as back up. I decided on a Mernickle "Field Carry II" holster; strong side and crossdraw. I ended up carrying it crossdraw and loved it. Right after I ordered the holster I sent my NMBH off to Clements CG to have him install his tall front sight for the heavy 335 gr boolits I would shoot through it. The holster and revolver arrived back shortly, but the taller front sight kept digging a ditch everytime I holstered the revolver. I called Mernickle in a panic as my hunt was only a few short weeks away. They said to simply return the holster and they would start on a new one, post hast and get it off to me. I also asked they lower the opening just above the top strap to make room for the Trijicon RedDot sight I wanted to install. The holster arrived early the next week and the workmanship was beautiful and the fit was good and snug. They didn't charge me a cent. That's CUSTOMER SERVICE! Ten minutes after our Cessna touched down on the gravel bar I had that baby strapped around my waist with a Wilderness Instructors belt and it didn't move for 10 days until we were back at the motel in Nome. Exremly comfortable! I'm not sure how comfortable it would be with your longer barrel. Their just up the road from you in Fernley, NV. http://www.mernickleholsters.com/fc/bm_fc2.html Here are some pics I took recently for "net" pursposes. Here it is last night on my concealed carry belt And here it is with the 6-round belt slide by Mernickle. Here it is in the field.

GSSP thanks for the reply. That looks like a very nice holster indeed. I have heard nothing but good from Mernickle. Where in UT are you? I used to live in UT county for several years. It's one of my favorite states.

FWIW, I've hunted with shoulder holsters (in the early years) and changed to crossdraw in the later years. About 4 years ago I carried my 454 Cassull Raging Bull in a crossdraw holster on a mountain lion hunt in Colorado. There was a lot of climbing in ice and snow and the crossdraw arrangement was ideal. Hands were free to climb with no restriction of my arm or shoulder and no rubbing my side. The holster was angled enough not to interfere with crouching or sitting. NRA Endowment Member
