Going to Maine on the 23rd for black bear with my handgun. Then Whitetail with my handgun in West Virginia on my land, and Delaware where I live.

I'm going to Colorado again this year for elk. The .308 Encore pistol worked so good last year, that I plan on using it again this year. However, that could change as the time draws nearer. Only nine weeks left! Here is last year's bull:

I'll also be hunting whitetails around home with a 10" .357 Max Contender. For wild hogs during "small game" season around home, I'll use the 209 X 50 Encore pistol.

Maybe black bear in W. Virginia in October. Definitely deer in December in W. Virginia, and I will try to squeeze in a couple more hog hunts in between, morethan likely in Florida. The .475 will get the nod in all cases with my M29 making a appearance during deer season.

Black bear out here on the West Coast.

I'll be bringing my .500 PC Hunter and a 20b SxS rifle from the 1860's

I'm still recovering from knee surgery, so my chances at getting into the right chase are not nearly as good as they could be.
Wish me luck!

RH1-

Wow man, that's a pretty quick surgery-to-field time there.
What did they do in your knee?
I got a new ligament, much cartilage repair including fracturing the femur and tibia to get new cartilage to grow where there was bone showing.
My knee was a mess.
I'll be *very much* taking it reeeaal easy out there this winter.

Heading north of Nome on 5 Sept for Grizzly. As most of you already know, I'll be packing both my 9.3x62 CZ 550 American and my 4-5/8" SS Ruger BH in 45 LC with 335 gr Cast Performance WFNGC @ 1140 fps. I'm in the process of installing a Trijicon 4 MOA RedDot sight. I paid Trijicon the extra $ for overnight shipping and 4 days later it's still not here. I called them the day I ordered it, they had it and they would "get it out today" and yesterday their excuse was they were "short handed". They said they would overnight it to my home. Still didn't arrive. AAAARRRRHHHH! Mad

But hey! I'm going Grizzly hunting dancing

I tore my meniscus and had some of it removed, it was to torn up to repair. He also did a lateral release on my ACL and worked on my patella.
This was the same knee I tore all the ligaments off the bone years back. I have all kinds of screws and wires in my knee from that still.

Sorry to hijack the thread. But yes the wife thinks I am not to smart going on my hunt so quickly after surgury. Hope you have a good recovery.

I apologize for hijacking the thread as well, but tinkerer, Redhawk is my hero today. We're both stoked up about the bear hunt next week so I was clearing the final trail on my property so we can come home to deer hunt. Well, I suffered a heat stroke while 12 feet off the ground in a tree stand and SOMEHOW Redhawk made it up the ladder in Olympic time to keep me from taking a header. I sure hope my stupidity won't cause him extra problems during recovery. We're supposed to have some bigassed bears waiting by Dunkin Donuts up there.

It was a scary thing that happened. We go into the woods thinking we will only be out there for a short time. George had plenty of water, but the heat, non-movement of air in the woods took a toll on him.

I did not go out with George when he first left for the woods to make the trails. I had some work to get done around the house. I decided I would go out and check on him to make sure he was OK . I noticed it was getting hot. I got to George when he was about 80% of the way done with what he wanted to do. I helped him finish marking the trails, and I cut down a few trees for him.
I noticed he was getting dehydrate and told him to get out of the woods, and get some air and to drink a lot of water, but actually it was a little to late, he was already feeling the affects of the heat. After I finished the trail marking and tree cutting, George wanted to put up a burlap camo net on a stand that sits on the edge of the woods, he said he felt better and went up the stand. It was only a few seconds when he said he could not get any air, I looked up in the stand just in time to see his eyes roll back into his head. I just went into over drive, yelling to George to hang on, I could see him leaning over and falling to the platform as I was making my way up the ladder, just as I got to the top, George was about to fall head first out of the stand. I pushed him back on the platform and kept talking to George to hang on.
A few seconds went by, and his eye rolled back to where I could see them. He was still out of it. I told him to keep his head down and I used his shirt to try to cool him down. George sat there for about 10 Minutes and started coming around. My next thought was, how am I going to get him out of the tree stand and back to the truck.
As George came around, we decided to make our way out of the stand, I stayed a few steps below him while he slowly came down, you do not know the relief it was to get him out of the stand.

Got him on the 4 wheeler and to the truck, where I put on the AC to full and got George a few bottles of water, he sat there about 15 minutes and reclined the seat. His color came back and his eye's looked clearer.

With this, I just want to tell all of you, be careful in the woods, we don't need to loose any of you. It only takes a few seconds for things to go wrong. I am glad everything went OK for George. I don't know what made me go out in the woods to check on him, but I am glad I did.

Thanks for the compliments on the elk guys. I will highly recommend Rocky Mountain Ranches should any of you want to go an a DIY elk hunt. I was excited that he chose to use my photo on his web site. You can look at the elk photos and get a feel for what kind of elk he has to offer. No "Boone and Crocketts but plenty good enough for this GA boy!

I was going to go on a mule deer hunt instead of an elk hunt this year but waited too long and he was sold out on his deer hunts, but he just happened to have a couple of elk slots left. thumb

Tempo, my .308 is a 17" Bullberry barrel. Hind sight is 20/20, but my thinking was that I could use QD rings and switch it back and forth between rifle and pistol configuration. It is a "one-ragged-holer" and never sees any range time as a rifle, so I wish that I would have ordered a 15"er. Oh well, it shoots so well that I ain't gonna mess with it! Check out these 100 yard groups with 150 grain Sierra Match Kings:

The groups on the right were made with the match bullets, the two groups on the left were shot with 165 grain Hornady hunting bullets. The barrel seems to show a definite preference for 150's. I shot the elk with a 150 grain Accubond.

Good luck on the bear hunts guys. I can't wait to see the photos!

You do have to get drawn for a tag, Redhawk. With one preference point, you can pretty much rest assured that you will get a license on any of his leases. However, he does have some leases in some game management units where the majority of the land is "private" land. Due to the fact that there is little public land available, there is little demand on the tags in these areas. My hunting partner and I both had "0" preference points (I used them all last year) and we were both drawn this year. thumb

I should mention that my bull was actually killed on public land. We camped on private land but the elk were on the adjoining tract of public land. Since you had to cross the private land to access the public land, this restricted the number of hunters on the public land. Competition from other hunters is the toughest challenge of elk hunting IMHO.

This is what MS Hitman was talking about, you like to take shots at people, and then cry when someone gives it back to you. You do not know how to keep a site peaceful, I see it on all the sites I go to that you are a part of, you always butt heads with someone.

You are the only person on this board I despise.
You try to make fun of a serious incident that occurred, and could of cost someone his life. Your post was not appreciated or funny one bit. And don't tell me you were being serious. Another perfect example of going agents MS Hitmans request.

Tempo, sorry for venting on your thread. But these constant cheap shots from JWP has me wearing thin.

No I did not make fun of a seriuos incident at all. I have had a heat stroke and I know how serious they can be. I had to be hosiptized and came very close to death and that happened when I was a young man playing football. That's why I recommended for george to hunt close to you. So you could help him if he needed it. One does not recover completely that rapidly.
