Dennis, shooting a .45-70 in a 16" Contendor is fun. It is not near as bad as I though it would be when I first shot it. But shooting gloves are a help if you are going to shoot it much. It does let you know that it is there. Slim

Dennis,

Like others have said, 45-70 and other rifle calibers aren't that much of a big deal as you can't burn that much powder in a shorter barrel. Combine that with the guns usually being heavier thye are actually pretty easy and fun to shoot.

More than wrist twisting, the thing that gets me with stiff loads in handguns is the shock and related tingling in my hands afterwards. If you do a bit of it, I'd suggest gloves for that.

tasco 74,
i aggree, the .357 suits me just fine. mine is an early 6" blue PYTHON, slickest trigger i've seen on a handgun. 125HP for defence and 148 HBWC, w/2.7gr.bullseye for target.

I LOAD 150gr HOME CAST SWC OVER 6gr BULLSEYE FOR FUN AND 148gr HBWC OVER 3 gr BULLSEYE FOR TARGET LOADS.I WAS TOLD NEVER TO USE HANDLOADS FOR DEFENSE BECAUSE A LAWER COULD SAY YOU LOADED AMMO TO KILL WITH AN YOU MIGHT GO TO JAIL. I HAVE LOADED SOME DANDY SUPER HOLLOW CAVITY SLUGS BY LOADING HBWC IN REVERSE OVER 4.7gr. BULLSEYE. THAT HAS GOT TO BE A DEVESTATING PROJECTILE TO BE HIT WITH.THEY ARE JUST FOR FUN THO . I ALWAYS KEEP 2 SPEED LOADERS FULL OF FACTORY AMMO JUST IN CASE.

A .357 MAG CAN BE YOUR BEST FRIEND

Shooting the big boys is just plain fun. Fun is the main reason I went with 270 Win in my Encore rather than something smaller.

The recoil isn't that bad really. The muzzle jump is much worse.

I thought my T/C contender in 45/70 looked awesome but this monster was something else! They had 3 of them. 2 were used(probally shot very little) The clyinder looked as big as a pop can!! Make a Freedom Arms 454 look like a cap gun! [Smile]

At the "Black Snake Rangers" cowboy shoots we have "El Zippo" who shoots a Magnum Research BRF 45/70 revolver loaded with 55gn FFG and 300gn light load

We got to send out a posse after each shoot just to stand up the targets but as the young kids say "Bloody Awesome"

I don't understand all the talk I've seen about big bore handguns twisting the wrist. I shoot several .44 magnums, a 15" Contener .45-70, a 10" FA .454, and a 12" .50 Alaskan Encore, and I shoot all of them fairly hot. Not a one of them have ever twisted in my hands to the point that it could cause damage to either my hands nor my wrists. Nor do I get the muzzle jump that so many of these gun rags show one getting. I think when they take those pictures they are "putting on the dog" for the camera. I honestly believe the rag writers purposely try to portray the image that in order to shoot big bore handguns that you need to be some hairy-chested testosterone laden gorilla. That's simply not true.

Well I clearly remember the bite and bark of bitch to this day ,though I shot it three years ago.
It was single shot, hammered, locally made 12ga hodah pistol in 6" barrel, chambered for 2 1/2" cartridge. [Eek!]
To say it nearly jurked my soul out of me gives the true meaning to the recoil, and the blast made me deaf for the whole day with severe headache.
The pstol nearly flew out of my hand, only saved by my trigger finger twisted in trigger guard.
Definately the worst shooting experience I ever had. [Mad]
