I just picked up a Ruger SuperRedhawk Toklat today. I began handgun hunting this year and wanted something a little different than my 14 y.o. FA model 83 premier. My gun store in CT had 8 in stock for 899.00 + this week they had a 10% off sale, it was a deal I didn't want to pass up. I figure I could use it open sight or add a small red dot like a fastfire 3 or delta point. I have an Ultradot on my 44 but want something smaller on this. Will the fastfire hold up, what dot size would you recommend? Also, what factory load for Northeastern whitetail and Florida/Texas hogs?
Thanks for your help -- Tom

I had the Burris Fast Fire on my Kimber 10mm and it held up just fine to the battering of the recoil and the slide going back into battery. I see no reason it couldn't hold up to the recoil of the Redhawk.

Tom,

Where did you find your revolver? May be in the market for one. Could you please PM me your shop?

Thanks,

I believe Toklat means brown (or grizzly) bear in a native Alaskan tongue.

I had to "google" it.

The revolver looks kind of funny to me with the roundish extended frame and the flat sided barrel, instead of a rounded barrel.

However I do like the fact that it takes the Ruger scope rings, allowing you to keep the iron sights on the gun.

Looks like a very good hunting revolver to me.

A great carry gun for Alaska...better barrel length than the Alaskan, and way cheaper than a Freedom Arms in a 5 1/2" barrel.

All true, but I once owned a Ruger 454 Casull and it was the worse recoiling revolver that these hands ever handled. Am no stranger to big bores and at one point owned three different 500's and a couple of 460's but the Ruger actually caused pain in my hands and wrists after about 10-15 rounds at the range.
Great concept, good price, and built hell for stout. Just hope it fits your hands and the recoil is a non issue.

Yes, many big bore handguns could benefit from a change in grips.

I agree - I haven't shot my new Toklat 454 yet but I have had a Freedom Arms Premier 454 - 6 inch for 14 years and I would say that gun is less friendly to shoot than my S&W 500. However I wanted a compact, powerful, easy to add a dot handgun for deer, hogs, and black bear and the Toklat seemed to be a good choice - could be just another excuse to buy a new gun.....

I have found that the Hogue Tamer grips that are now standard on .454 and .480 Ruger SRHs to be quite good. A far cry from what they came with before.

I think recoil will always be an issue with designs such as the SRH, except for those with a lot of big bore experience. My wrists and elbows have gotten old enough that I don't enjoy the pounding any more. I briefly owned a Smith 500 and the muzzle brake really tamed it. With the unbraked SRH, there is just so much drop from the axis of the bore to the pivot point of the wrist that the barrel naturally levers upward upon ignition.
At least, that's my layman's take on it.

I fully agree. I have one of these, still unfired unfortunately. I also have a Freedom 454 with a 5.5" barrel, which I do like very much. I also have a Freedom 475 with a 4.75" barrel, this replaced the 454 as my favorite packing pistol. But, this 5" barrel Toklat may become a favorite.
For the price and function these Ruger Super Redhawks seem to be a bargain in the bigger bores. I wish they would offer a Toklat in the 480.
The looks of the Toklat is growing on me. And the 5" barrel is my favorite barrel length. Also, the 6 round cylinder and transfer bar system is a possible plus over the Freedom.
My son has a Toklat and this is his favorite packing pistol in a Diamond D chest type holster.
A plug for the Diamond D folks: I am also a fan of these holsters, not the fanciest, but a great value for function and great people to deal with.

Of course there is the option of chopping the barrel on a SRH. The Toklat has the slab sided barrel. Those used to be the rage in revolver PPC competition. I have in mind John Gallager cutting my 480 Ruger 9 1/2" to 5 1/2", mount some Bowen Rough Country sights and calling it good. Of course a 30mm Ultradot for bear hunting near dusk is needed too.

I saw on the sign at Chimo's Guns in Wasilla, Toklats in stock. . I didn't see any bear cages around so I had to go in and ask. I know what a Toilet grizzly is.
I liked the revolver but I've switched to the G20 so I don't plan on getting one. But it is imo an excellently set up revolver for general purpose including bear protection up here. . For that reason and because I have lots of 45 Colt and 454 components. If I found a good deal on one and had the $$$ in my pocket I would be tempted to get one.
Its good to know that the Burris Fast Fire held up to the battering of a 10 mm auto. I have thot about getting one.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."
