Recoil is subjective. Variables such as grip size and shape play a large role in how recoil is perceived. Other variables I have seen affect recoil are bullet weight for caliber and the burning rate of powders.

My best advice is to shoot as many revolvers as you can before settling on the one you want. For me, the 475 Linebaugh, 500 Linebaugh, .500 JRH, and S&W (for the loads I have shot) all seem to recoil about the same when loaded comparably.

If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

Good advice. I have a couple of Super Redhawks and they all kick pretty hard as double actions recoil straight back. I have also shot the BFR in .475 pretty extensively, and my .475 SRH definitely kicks harder. The BFR is a really great platform in my opinion.

Thanks guys
I knew you all would be able to help. My only problem now is that no one I hangout and hunt with as any large cals. The one guy I knew with a 454 has moved away.
I think I will save up and try the BFR in 475. If I don't like it I can always put it on ARBAY Cool

Montana Maddness

These guys have given you good advice.

I had always used a 44 MAG usually a S&W for my hunting.

When I wanted to try something bigger I went with a FA 475 Linebaugh with a 6" bbl.

I really like the FA and the 475.

I find the recoil from a single action to be easier on my hands than from a double action revolver. I do not like the rubber grips on a single action.

I have shot Hornady 480 loads, and they recoil about like a 44 Mag.

The 400gr Hornady 475 Linebaugh loads recoil a bit more but are not painful.

I have taken pig, deer and black bear with them. I also used some 400gr Hornadys as a finisher on some zebra, and they gave excellent expension and penetration.

The Buffalo Bore 420 full power lead loads, and some special penetrator bulleted loads I had penetrated to the brain on elephants as well.

A step up in power and recoil are the various Buffalo Bore 475 loads.

I have fired my 475 side by side with a FA 454, both with full power loads and will say this...

The light bulleted 454 and 475's feel about the same, the heavy bulleted 454's and 475's feel about the same. If you can handle one you can handle the other.

I fine the heavier bulleted loads easier on my hands than the lighter bullets.

Which ever revolver you decide to get I think the 475 Linebaugh is a very good choice.

Montana, there's nothing there not to like. You'll see! Get it and enjoy it! Remember that you don't really need to load it to max velocities......

I have found Hornady's ammo offerings in these two calibers (.480 and .475) to be lacking. The 400 grain .475 load runs just a hair over 1,200 fps out of my SRH, and the recoil to me feels more like a .480 than a full-tilt .475. As NE 450 No2 pointed out, stepping up to Buffalo Bore's offerings is a step up in performance (and recoil!). I have two nearly identical SRHs -- one in .454 and one in .475 and for me at least, the .475 has heavier recoil than the Casull, and I have loaded the Casull pretty heavily......just my observation.....

If you are not a reloader, look no further than Buffalo Bore IMHO......

Yes, the .454 is sharper and faster. Not earth shaking but there is a difference.

My very large hands aren't comfortable with ruger standard grips so I bought Hogue Rubber grips for my blackhawks like them a lot. I bought 100 magtech 225 grain 454 all copper hollow point bullets from midway to load for my 15" encore 454casull pistol and 20" bullberry sw460mag rifle since ca has banned lead in the extinct bird zone which they expanded far beyond there range.

Not much sharper and definitely not as heavy IMHO...... We have loaded everything from light bullets at 1,900 fps all the way up to 400 grains and everything in between, and it still won't touch the .475's ability to abuse the shooter....... Big Grin

Not really. I guess I should have said Late wifes stuff. Margaret has been gone for 7 years. Cancer got her at 42. Talked to my daughter and she said go a head she doesn't want the stuff either. Both of us are more into new stuff. It would be different if it was family handmedown, but It's not, just old stuff Margaret collected and now is collecting dust.
So all is well. You won't be hearing of the old lady beating me to death! And believe you me I wouldn't even attempt such a thing if she was still alive! Nothing worse than a pissed of biker oldlady! dancing

Nother ?
Do you guys thing there is much advantage to the longer barrels? My 41 is just a S&W with a 6". I have killed two deer at +/- 100yrd and several and closer range.
I'm thing the 6.5" or the 7.5" on the BFR is more than enough. Would I be wrong? I don't plan to be shooting any farther than 100-125 yards anyway. I'm sure they are plenty acc enough for that range.
How much is bbl length effect muzzle lift/ recoil? My 6" is the only pistol I have hunted with. So my lack of expearnce (and spelling) Wink are coming out.
I just have not shot a lot of pistols but mine.

I love the BFR .475 with the 7-1/2" barrel. I like the longer barrel to get the muzzle blast a little farther out. I really wanted the 10" but it was a special order. Short barrels are OK if you wear muffs or plugs when hunting.
I can't see shooting a 4" barrel or a compensated one with nothing on my ears. Since cover is thick, I need to hear as well as see. I tried the special muffs but there is no directional hearing.
One shot at a deer doesn't bother me but I don't want to be flipped out of my stand by muzzle blast either.

6 to 7.5-inches is plenty for those ranges. Longer barrels are just harder to pack and really long barrels make the revolver nose heavy IMHO.

BFR bbl lengths tend to be 1/2" or so longer than advertised as they meas from the front of the frame to muzzle.
