I used my 45-70 BFR revolver for a nice doe on the last day of doe season yesterday. I have two with my bows, one each with the .475, .44 and 45-70. Time to quit for the year. We still have a tremendous doe herd here.

Congratulations! I see you are from Bakerton. I was born in Shepherdstown 60 years ago. True you have so many deer in your area. I still have a few contacts back there with farmers. One I know asked me a couple years ago if I knew anyone who wanted to fill a few crop damage permits he has. From Bakerton, you can get to his farm in about 15 minutes. Good to see someone from back “home.†I’ll be taking my S&W 460 on a late season elk hunt at the end of this month. I’m excited. I missed out on the local blacktail season because Warne was having a few problems with their rail mounts. Long story….. But back to your thread. That area really needs more does killed. I hope you can get a few more before the automobiles do it for you.

Yes, the road kills are unreal. They keep building more and more developments and the traffic is crazy. Soon there won't be any place for deer except back yards. Good luck with your .460! A friend shot a buck at 140 yd's with his. Where do you live now?

I talked to the owner (the company is not too far from me). He received a bad lot of stock metal and he refused to make and sell his product using inferior material. He seems to have things back under control now. You have to respect a man who pulls him product off the shelves because he doesn’t want to sell something that doesn’t meet his specifications. Anyway, the problem put him a few weeks behind schedule. Everything is back on track now.

bfrshooter, Glad your season went well. Where is Bakerton? I live in Kanawha County above Charleston between I-77 and I-79. Between the very poor mast last year and the poachers, our deer herd has crashed. I saw 11 deer together on my land as late as April, but nothing more than pairs of small deer this fall. Have heard of as many as 30 deer killed by poachers in the late spring ... makes me sick. Mike -------------- DRSS, Womper's Club, NRA Life Member/Charter Member NRA Golden Eagles ... I can help answer that if I may since I was born and raised in that area. I sold my last piece of property near Molers Crossroads between Shepherdstown and Bakerton. Bakerton is a stones throw from Harpers Ferry in Jefferson County. Deer have over run the Eastern Panhandle of the state. If you can find a farm to hunt on, you really shouldn’t have any problem loading up with venison. It has been amazing how the deer population there has exploded there. The first deer season in Jefferson took place in 1956. There were a grand total of 11 deer killed in the entire county that year. One was killed by my uncle in a place called Tarpins Neck on the old farm where the National Fisheries Research Institute (or whatever it’s called today) now stands. My family use to have the run of the farm. Anyway, now there are thousands of deer killed in the county but that number may be decreasing now because of all the closed farms. Good luck. West Virginia is lousy with whitetails.
