Hello, we used a hacksaw cutting through the closest port to the crown end of the barrel, have some spare hack saw blades cuz that compensator is hard!
Dress it with a file, the recoil really doesn't change w/o the comp.

Rabbit Creek,
Thanks for responding. I have shot at the Rabbit Creek Range many times when I lived there. Used to work at Great Norther Guns for a few years too.
When you dressed the wound created by hack sawing the muzzle break off, did it look ok? Is it something you would do again or is it too ugly? Interesting that you didn't notice a difference in recoil without the brake.
Have you talked to S&W about the brake, or maybe an authorized repair station? I wonder if you could get a short piece that would fit flush and install without haveing to cut the brake off. Chuck Gruben at "Great Guns" used to be a repair station. That's different than Great Northern you know. If you do any chronographing with your gun, let us all know about your results. Thanks, Shad.

A friend of mine wants to know if you can easily remove the muzzle brake on this special model of the 500 S&W. If it is removed, does it look ok at the muzzle, and can you shoot it without it on? In other words, could you take it off and leave it off and have it look fine & shoot.

Do you have the link? I checked the website and I could only find the 3 models everyone already knows about, the 4", the 8 3/8" and the 500 PC. 10" model. The comp on my 8 3/8 model is not removable, atleast not easily, it twists off but I think you have to have a special tool to do it. The 4" model comes with two different comps and you can change them out. As far as I know the comp on the 10" model is also fixed, like the 8 3/8" model and it's supposed to be a permanent fixture.
