I just returned from a pronghorn hunt in Wyoming on the Durham Buffalo Ranch near Wright, about 30 miles South of Gillette. This was the 1st Little Gun Invitational Hunt, conceived by Gregg Richter when the ranch's game counts showed that the last winter kill, and perhaps other unknown factors lowered pronghorn populations on the ranch enough that the Annual HHI Antelope Hunt had to be cancelled. Only 5 pronghorn hunters were permitted to hunt the ranch this year, and for bucks only, as opposed to the 20-25 hunters allowed in past years. I had hunted this ranch on the HHI hunt 20 years earlier, and when I finally retired for the last time in Sept. of 2010, I decided to do it again. Joining me in Wyoming along with Gregg were my old friends Fred and Anita, from New Hampshire - veterans of more than 20 pronghorn hunts - and Kent and Jared, a father / son team from North Dakota. This 4 1/2 to 5 year old pronghorn was taken on the second day of the hunt after a long period of waiting and watching for an opportunity, followed by a 350 yard stalk. I used my 14" Contender in .257 JDJ, wearing a Bushnell 3200 2-6X scope and 100 gr Ballistic Tips @ 2620 fps. The range was a shockingly close 125 yards.

Hi Bill, and thanks. The ranch wanted half the liver, to send to the Wyoming Game Dept. lab for some sort of testing program they're doing. You're right about the meat of course. I had some antelope sausage for breakfast both yesterday and today.

Nice buck. Love the area. You didn't get bit by the hot wires at the bottom of the game fence did you? Capacitors store the juice and whack the crap out of the bison and one (former) state trooper that I know. We were working a fatal wreck on the bridge just north of the Breene Road on WYO 59. (North of the main entrance to the Durham Ranch.) As he stepped down into the brush to recover some evidence I heard him say: Quote: "WAHOO!" He had the wire contact the top of his instep of his boot. Next day he said it felt like a baseball bat had been applied to his hip. No, John Flocchini mentioned the fences to us, but I was no where near any fences when hunting. I can see where it would be a good idea to keep 2500 critters weighing up to 2200 lbs. apiece from wandering across 59, though.
