On most all of the hunting revolvers I have owned over the years I have always put a scope on them and in doing so I limited them to strictly a non-handheld firearm from that point on. Yes, they were more accurate at longer ranges but IMO the fun was gone and the only time I fired them was just before hunting season. My problems with scopes and my anatomy is even the longest eye relief scopes on the market are not long enough for me to shoot with my arms extended. So, I am forced to creep up on the scope in order to see my target (no fun with the flash the .460 has around the cylinder). I have been thinking about alternate optics this time. I am really considering a magnified Aimpoint sight. Anyone out there using one of these on a .460 S&W or one of the more high power hunting revolvers offered today? My thought is I would have a longer eye relief than with std optics and some magnification for those rare 200 yard shots at a groundhog or whatever. Opinions and suggestions welcome....... this .460 is one of the most fun guns I have ever owned and really like shooting it for fun as well as its hunting applications. I am just hesitant to put a std scope on it which will force me to always shoot it supported. Supported shooting for me means less shooting because I expect more in the area of accuracy and lose a lot of the fun in shooting. If I always have to support the handgun I might as well own a rifle IMO.

My opinion is that with the range and potential accuracy of the 460 S&W, it's a waste not to put some type of optic with magnification on it. I prefer scopes but I think the Aimpoint is good as well.

I have to agree with Grumulkin. If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ Member of the Delaware Destroyers Member Reeders Misfits NRA Life Member ENDOWMENT MEMBER NAHC Life Member DSA Life Member

Yeah the Aimpoint Comp3 2x in either 1 moa or 2 moa has my interest. The 1 moa might be a bit aggressive for unsupported use as it is beyond the accuracy potential of the firearm IMO. The 2 moa might be more realistic in accuracy potential and less frustrating holding on target at longer ranges. What do you guys think 1 moa or 2 moa for groundhogs and deer to 150+ yards

Redhawk...which scope mount did you use on your .460 S&W. The S&W mount or another? The S&W site isn't too descriptive on their mount but does say it only works on pre drilled .460's.

I used a Warne base, Leupold 30mm rings and an Aimpoint 9000SC with 4 moa dot on my .500 Smith. I would consider this set up usable up to 150 yards under IDEAL conditions. My definition of ideal would be a clear shot at a standing or walking deer and a solid shooting position with a load that's accurate. A 2 moa dot would be better for long shots at small targets, I suppose, but 4 moa is better for close and fast. I never used a red dot with magnification but would probably go with my 2X Leupold or 2 to 6 Bushnell 3200 before that. Sitting with my back to a tree, forearms on my knees and shooting at paper plates stapled to trees at various distances is how I determine at what distances I belong shooting at critters.

MY PC model came with factory mount. On the other 460 Mags, I use the Warne base, http://www.warnescopemounts.com/whatsnew.asp If you're going to make a hole, make it a big one. Dadhawg, If I understand the info on the Warne base correctly, it secures using the existing rear sight attaching points...is that correct? If so, does it use longer screws and secure on top of the existing rear sight or is the rear sight removed and the base secured in it's location? It also states that the rear AND front sight are able to be secured to the scope mounts......is that correct or are my old eyes playing tricks on me? The reason I am shying away from a standard scope this time is with my physical make up I have never found a handgun scope which allowed me to fire the handgun at full extension or in a Credmore position. The amount of flash around the cylinder of the .460 doesn't make one want to get their face any closer than absolutely necessary in order to keep eyebrows and facial hair intact. I do appreciate your suggestions and comments. The .460 S&W has become my new "fun" gun and I want to only add those things to the gun that improve the experience. I have owned a custom XP-100's and loaded it up for various purposes but the higher powered optics actually made the guns less fun and more work to shoot. I have gone the one hole route in my youth but age has a way of letting one know such expectations now would much more difficult if not impossible to obtain due to aging eyesight and physical limitations. Don't get me wrong I still expect to hit where I aim but if it is a little off it won't be the "end of the world" so to speak as it was in my youth. Shooting is a lot more "fun" now without those internalized pressures I would put on myself. I want my firearms to be set-up with that in mind....see what I want to hit and hit where I am aiming without turning it into work.

Well I ordered a Aimpoint 9000sc 2x 2moa scope and a Warne base with medium QD rings. They should all be here by next weekend. The reason I didn't go with the Comp 3 version is because of the single ring mount. The 9000sc use's 2 30mm rings and removing and replacing the scope should be more repeatable than a single ring application. I guess everyone uses blue loctite on the base attaching screws? I have found loose screws on the gun after every sessions at the range so far. I now check the muzzle brake screw after every 15-20 shots with .460 loads as this screw loosens up the fastest. The side plate screws have all been touched with blue loctite which helped the problem there. Thanks again for the replies.....

DEcevR I apologize for posting here and not keeping track of the thread after. By now I suspect these questions are answered.
