Is a .44 mag single shot pistol suitable for practise on an indoor range when shooting .308 single shot for open air ranges and hunting?

My indoor pistol range is 2 miles away, whilst the closest outdoor range is 45 miles, just wondered what you guys do?

I would have to say it depends on what your indoor range allows to be shot in the bays. Our indoor range has bays that are handgun calibers only and rifles are allowed in some of the bays. I suggest you check with the range owners.

To answer the gist of your question, the .44 mag should be okay for practice if you are using the same receiver or type of firearm for practice as well serious shooting. I own a .22 LR barrel for my T/C Contender and it makes an excellent practice barrel for the larger calibers.

The 44 Mag. barrel should help you get accustomed to recoil but the 308 will have significantly more recoil unless you have a brake on it. Any kind of handgun shooting will help but there is no substitute for at least a few session on the big range with your 308.

My indoor range is pistol cals only, some guys do shoot .308 but reduce the load to 3.5grns of bullseye powder and load lead from .30 M1 rounds, this round is also varmint legal over here and has the advantige of not going through the bullet stop Smiler

.44 and .308 are both Competitor actions and I'm just waiting for my paperwork back so I can have the .308 moderatered, should take the sting off, will get to the big range now the summers here Cool

I'd say yes, shooting the 44 in the same action will be effective for training with the .308. I'd also say spend alot of time dry firing, there is nothing more helpful to becoming proficient with a handgun then 1000's a dry snaps and making sure the sight stays steady after the pin falls.

Paul,

I do dryfire, alot, the wife thinks I'm mad, just line the cross hairs up with some bottle tops in the kitchen, my shooting has dramatically improved since I got the snap caps. 5 shots groups will have all holes touching now Smiler
