After killing 2 pigs and a deer with my black powder rifle [see muzzleloading forum] I was banned from leaving camp with the BP rifle. So 2 days after Thanksgiving I "went for a walk" on the deer lease with only my 6" 475 FA Linebaugh, loaded nwith factory Hornady 400 gr HP.
I saw several deer. Suddenly I looked to my right and there was a doe very close. I drew the FA cocked it and aimed for a high lung shot. [I like to eat the heart, so I try not to hit it if possible].
At the shot the deer went right down. The distance was 17 yards.
The 400 gr Hornady showed signs of expansion.
The more I shoot this 475 FA the more I like it.

My sentiments exactly. Congrats on the handgun deer! You may want to try the 425 WFN LBT bullet with 8.0 grains of WW231. It does a nominal 830 fps from my 6" FA. Pleasant to shoot and will definitely punch a hole through a whitetail.

The guys do not care how many pigs I shoot, It is the wife, she gets tired of cutting the meat for the freezer every night for a week after work.

When I killed the turkey I used Buffalo Bores light load with a 420 grain bullet at 983 fps [chronoed in my pistol].
I will work up a similar load, probably with Unique [as I have some of it on hand, any suggeations?]. That load is plesant to shoot with one hand and will kill most game close in for sure.

You can use 231 and Unique interchangeably, so I'd try 8 grains of Unique first and tweak it from there.

Thanks. That velocity with a @400 grain bullet is a good one. You can shoot it with one hand.
I have some Cast Performance 410 gr bullets.

I find in the 480 that 7 gr of unique pushes a 400 gr ~700 fps, and they're very mild to shoot.

N E 450 No2,

Congratulations Guy! You had a hellova week hunting ... whack'm & stack'm!

Bet the guys in camp had a little performance anxiety with the handgun doe adder to the stack. Sure makes for great freezer filling Big Grin

You've done something else I've not been able to do ... you're wife does the butchering?

Again, congratulations!

I do the work in the field, ie. skinning and breaking the meat down for the icechest.
When we get home she cuts it and wraps it for the freezer. Some times I help her, when I can't get out of it. Big Grin

We use a Foodsaver vacuum packing machine.

My wife is really good at taking it out of the freezer! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Shouldn't complain I guess, there are some folks who don't like game meat at all.
