Whit; you said "a 10 pound revolver" in my post! Starting to compute those recoil figures, eh?

C'mon Marko, you got a bald chest?

our 5.25 pound test pistol amounts to only 92.9 ft. lbs. for the Standard (1280 fps) load and a somewhat more interesting 125.6 ft. lbs. for the Premium (1610 fps) load. We feel that any experienced handgunner with hair on his or her chest should be able to handle that level of recoil energy without complaint.

Peter.

Not me. I'm not the one downloading my big bores! What's that weak sister load you run in your .475, Peter? Isn't it a couple of grains away from max??

My revolver in .50 Alaskan produces over 100-ft-lbs of recoil energy. I have hair on my chest! Big Grin

Just messing with you!

Hey! As another poster says: I always load 5 grains above max with all my loads. It impresses folks on the Internet.
Also:
"his or her chest'. Not sure I want to meet HER!

Whit; My deer load for the 44 mag was a 250 grain bullet at 1000 fps (until last year). The recoil factor was 6 ft lbs at 11 fps. I used that load for near 30 years, and it did just what your 500 can do....kill deer. Well, because I am an opened minded guy, and since I have been reading this forum for a while and listening to you "high power" shooters, I decided to step up my load...you know, really go all out!!! So, I loaded up a 325 grain bullet at 1063 for a whopping recoil factor of 10 ft lbs at 13 fps..... believe me, this baby will kill at both ends!!! Big Grin

Flat top, I load for accuracy first and foremost. The chronograph comes out as an afterthought long after the load has been developed. That said, I do run my .475 like it was designed to run and the 420s clock right around 1,350 out of my .475. It'll shoot under an inch at 50 yards as long as I do my part. My .500 Linebaugh runs only at 1,100 fps. I don't push 'em for the sake of pushing them, but it really doesn't bother me that they do kick a bit!

Now, the .50 Alaskan is a different beast altogether -- more or less a novelty. When you're burning more than 50 grains of powder, it just can't help but recoil...... shocker

Whit; I do a lot of custom gunsmithing. I have a process of modifying a 444 levergun that can produce the ballistics of a 450-400 Nitro Express.....I call it my "Safari Grade" levergun. Even though this rifle is easily capable of sending a 405 grain bullet down range at 2150+ fps (thats over 4000 ft lbs....which will kill any game animal on the planet with a correct bullet), I only shoot a 300 grain bullet at 1850 fps for deer hunting.....I am just trying to kill the deer, not turn it inside out! I load my handguns with the same logic......a load appropriate for the game I am after and the distances I will shoot. Now, I will admit that I do not take long shots....50 maybe 60 yards at best, but, a bit more velocity for the longer shots (if I could see well enough to take them), would not be out of the question. I guess that I am just in a happy place, where I only need load, what I need to get the job done in short order....without blowing the animal to kingdom come....its always nice to have some meat left for the pot Wink! I just try to be sensible when I load up for game, and I have found through experience that only the "right" load is needed to take game efficiently...not the most powerful load that the firearm can produce. The big blasters are fun to shoot and watch others shoot (I could watch you shoot that .50 Alaskan all day long Big Grin), and they do make quite an impression. That kind of power has its place in the field, where that kind of power is "needed", but a heavy bullet at "low to moderate" velocity and reduced recoil is still my choice for handgun hunting and has served me well for many years. diggin

I don't do game specific loads. I develop the one load for all encounters, and get real familiar and proficient with it. If something lighter is called for, I will grab a smaller caliber like one of my .429 magnums. But that's just me!

And no, there is no real or practical use for the .50 AK! But it is fun! Big Grin

The .50 AK is simply too much for a revolver -- it needs to be loaded down a bit. I am confident that my .475, .500 L, and .500 JRH can handle everything and anything!

Good luck and shoot straight!

Is this thing for real? Where can you see a photo of the thing that shoots such ammo?

Since this is just a little rimmed handgun cartridge, do y'all think I can run it in an older Winchester 92?
The barrel on the 25-20 is looking pretty shot out, and this new cartridge looks ideal for jackrabbit on the ranch.

Cheers
