Starting a running thread relating my experiences with a new Smith&Wesson 629-6 .44 Magnum revolver. 8 3/8 barrel, serial no. range DAK699x. Sold an old Browning Broadway Trap, and turned part of the money into the new Smith.
I was immediately impressed with the fit, finish, trigger pull, and general feel of the big gun.....And this comes from a guy that owns, and shoots a beautiful, old "S" Model 29!
The new Smith appears to have a case-hardened hammer and trigger, with the hammer being a wide target type, and the trigger being a wide, smooth, combat design. Having owned a few early stainless Smiths, with their characteristic rough, gritty trigger pulls; this new/old casehardened design is a pleasure to cock and shoot.......And the pull is not too light. Unlike my old "S" which came from the factory with a trigger pull of barely 2 1/2 lbs. Way to light for my shooting style with a heavy recoiling gun....
Sights are the excellent, standard, red ramp front, and white outline rear......Only trouble is, I don't see red as well as I used to in my younger days..... So I made a call to the Custom Shop, and five days, and 25 bucks later, a new target type partridge sight arrived at my door. The front sight is a no tools, spring loaded, interchangeable type, and the new one fit perfectly.......And the height was exact; (never had to move the rear sight to retain zero.)
The ammo shelf was stocked with a few boxes of Hornady 240 gr. XTP hollowpoints, so I was well equipped to "boom a little."
I live out in the country, and can shoot off my back deck. I have some 1/2" thick steel plates hanging at various distances, for gongs, and I selected the 100 yd, 8" x 16" to miss first.
Well, to my surprise, and delight, the first cylinder full through the new gun resulted in 6 big "bongs".
Now, I know that's a pretty big target, but, hey, new gun, never adjusted the sights; I'll take it! And I shot up all the ammo I had....
Next time I'll get into my reloading, and more shooting results........But fellas, I can tell you this; at all ranges, up to, and including 150 yds., this 629 will put full-power 240 gr. jacketed hollowpoints into the kill zone of a whitetail deer with boring regularity...... And that's what I bought it for.......
Grant.
