Is there something as quiet as a 45 LC, which would work for pigs, wounded dear, etc, and could be fired from some type of 1911?

(I shot a wounded deer w. my G29 once, and couldn't hear properly for 3 days, so I don't think 10MM is the answer.)

45 ACP w. squarish bullets? 400 Corbon? 38 Super w. FMJ?

If the deer just needs a finishing shot you could easily slip a pair of plugs in your ears before you shoot.

But you do bring up a great point; for those of us who are trying to preserve what hearing we have left, this is a serious issue. I'm trying to find a good hearing protection system for hunting that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. And one that is easy to use in the field with a minimum of movement and fuss. I'd like to be able to slip a pair of plugs in before the shot but that is much better in theory than in practice. Again, some of the other hearing/sound protection devices, at least right now, are out of my price range.

I use the Walker Game Ears 3.I put them in in the morning and leave them in until I am done hunting.Dont even know you have them in.I think they cost about $400.00 for a pair.I do not use the foam plugs they come with.I got a pair molded for my ears.Cost about $85.00 for the molded plugs.I figure my hearing is with more than $500.00 anyday!!!! The 10MM was on a wounded deer near a street in town. (The farmboy instincts to not let an animal suffer won out over the concerns about shooting a gun inside city limits - but I didn't think about grabbing my ears from the trunk.)

I'll check out the 45 ammo. I bought some hunting plugs from westone, but I haven't tried them out yet.

I have a close friend who has had the misfortune to have shot deer on 3 occassions after being hit by a car near his cornfield. He carries a 45 acp glock for defense. the federal 230 grain hollowpoint has worked with full penetration of chest cavity from 20 feet.
The sad part is by law, one is suppossed to wait until a F & W officer comes to do it. After having a nice buck suffer overnight with a broken pelvis-- he has started doing it himself.
