he's turned 13 and realizes he will be shooting downloaded handloads. he had the choice of one of my FA 454's with a 45 colt cylinder as well, a new bfr 475, a bfr 454, a super redhawk casull or a 44 mag. well........he's been looking and shooting some different loads and he chose a smith 629 44 mag.

it's not what he chose that makes me proud, it's why. through the years of shooting he's come to really understand the role a good trigger plays in accurate shooting (which he believes is number 1 in effective hunting, obviously) and he tried many many different guns including my bfr 475 (which i love btw) and really preferred the ease of use of a double action gun and felt that 44 mag is totally adequate for anything he's gonna do with it and he just never felt a ruger trigger that felt as good as the smith. i would've been comfortable with any of the above choices but left it up to him.

curious what you guys think of his choice and his reasoning.

That's awesome and you must be proud! I was going to say that a .44 would probably be the best choice. You can load it up or down (you can load all of 'em up or down) to suit your needs........ By making this choice, he is light years ahead of the way I was thinking at 13! You've obviously done well in raising him and explaining the dynamics of this sport.

Very good choice, he has room to grow. No need to start out with the biggest. Starting young with handguns is a great idea.

Sounds like you have a wise young man there. It is always good to see your kids make wise informed choices. Means in some small part we as parents have done our jobs.
As for his choice. Good one the 629 44mag is a wonderfull pistol. I hunt with a S&W 57 in 41mag and the trigger is awsome, it is very accurate. I love my Smithy!

I think he made an excellent choice.
Especially for his first big bore.

No matter what his second, third, etc handgun is, a S&W 44 Mag will always be a useful revolver.

Also be sure and get him some Speer shotshells.

My wife and I have used them to kill snakes, and a bunch of rabbit, squirrel, and grouse for the pot.

Heck I am wearing a 4" 629 Mountain Gun as I type this.

thanks for the kind words. we have a big hunt planned in january and my son wants to take his axis doe with his blr 308 but wants to take his ram with the 44 mag. since he's gonna run the .44 i've decided against using the casull or the 475 on my buff, i'm gonna go with the .44 as well and use the buffalo bore 250 grain hardcast at 1250 fps to see if they do penetrate like they claim with a light recoil load. i'm gonna stoke his barrel with the corbon dpx rounds, the leverevolution 44 mags, or i may load some 240 grain hardcasts at about 1000fps for a light load which will have no problem taking down a ram.
